Before I worried about OBDII reporting 195F on one 80 and 200F on another 80, I would WANT TO KNOW THE ACTUAL ACCURACY of the temperature sensor...

The factory OBD2 sensors that I have tested were very close, closer than some aftermarket that I have tested. The good thing about them; all are in the same place, so makes for a direct comparison. Have seen aftermarket sensors mounted all over, coolant temp varies depending on where it is in the motor. A sensor mounted in the head will show different than one in the water neck, or in a hose, etc.
 
Highest ive seen is 207 full throttle up vail pass. Usually between 176-190 under normal conditions.

If anything slightly cool. The factory thermostat isn't fully open till ~200F+, so when the motor is worked hard, making full power, it's not uncommon to see 210F+.
 
Yeah I'm not sure how accurate the scan gage or Ultragage is really. I'd like to install an aftermarket gage. To thr previous poster, can you give a link to the pod setup as well as where you tapped into the engine for a sending unit?
The Scan Gauge would be reading whatever the ECU has, which comes directly from the water temp sensor. Here's the details of my install from my build thread:

Autometer dual gauge pod for 94-01 Acura Integra (#20110)
Rustoleum 'Cobblestone' spray paint to match the tan interior
GlowShift MaxTow digital/analog water temp gauge
GlowShift 40mm water temp sensor adapter
GlowShift 7-color transmission temp gauge

Installed. Transmission probe was not hooked up in this picture, hence its whacky reading.

Is there anything that would cause one of our engines to run too cool, other than a faulty thermostat?
 
I run too cool I believe. Based on the Koso gauge I installed. Around town 174-176* @ ambient of 80* outside. Mountain passes and taxing it I've only ever hit 203* tops. Black clutch running 10k fluid, new radiotor (RadRadiator or some cheap thing I had to slap in there), new OEM tstat and no rad fan shroud. Once it get a little warmer around here (90*+) I may see the gauge at 183-185*.
 
same as retro - 10K in the black hub clutch - have not seen over 190 yet, but it hasn't gotten hot here in Baton Rouge yet - Koso gauge installed at the water neck as in jcardona's pic. Measuring temp at the water neck with the infrared thermometer confirms the Koso reading.

I have 15k in a modded black hub, my aftermarket gauge is telling me that I run 165-175 most of the time, never over 185. I thought it might have been a faulty thermostat, so I put in a new OEM one and still the same temps. This is why I am interested if there is something besides the thermostat that would cause the engine to run cool, or if my gauge is just off.

And I do not have obd2 to check against.

Just ordered a new OEM fan clutch. I am assuming its the blue hub version.

I am planning on running 10,000 cst oil, and want to use Toyota stuff, part number: 08816-10001

However, I cannot find how much oil is provided per bottle. Looks like I will need about 40ml. How many will I need to order?

EDIT ... Just went and bought some 20,000cst from a hobby shop.

Thanks for the info greentruck - i'll check out the temp guage mod...

The penny has just dropped, OBDII would give the specific readings that everyone is quoting here. Not a luxury i have in the 1990 model!

Well not everyone ;) '94 here US spec w/o ODBII
 
I have a koso digital in the coolant just like jcardonas.
I just swapped on my 15k weighted eaton clutch fan on the other day and today in 90 degree weather it got as high as 192 while sitting at a stoplight for 5-6 minutes immediately after I got off the freeway. Once I started moving it dropped to 180-184
 
i also have a 94 and do not have the obdII port. i was wondering if there was a way i can connect a after market digital gauge to my factory temp sensor? i would rather do that then cut up the upper hose.
 
I'd think you could just disconnect the sender lead to the wiring harness and wire an aftermarket gauge. But then your ECU won't have a proper temp reading? Your factory gauge in the dash also wouldn't work.

Can two gauges work off the same sensor? I don't know, but that way everything above is OK and you have an additional backup in the aftermarket gauge.
 
I'd think it's possible...you'd have to do this in the OEM temp gauge area; after doing the temp gauge mod, if you wanted to have two different gauges. I might look into this...but I'd imagine you'd some how splice/tap into the the OEM temperature gauge (after doing the mod with the resistor) for your after market digital (i.e. koso) reader. Now that I'm thinking out loud...I'd either replace the OEM gauge or integrate with a digital display inside the instrument cluster :p...yeah lot of work.

Greenbomber: Even though it is fair amount of additional work, it would be interesting to record what temps you get for a couple weeks with the new OEM fan clutch just as it is (no oil change), and then to take it out, swap in the CST oil, re-install it and record temps again.
 
Being an ME, I'd be very inclined to do this... : )

I've got a thermo gun as well, and can take the OBD2 readout from Ultragauge, as well as various temperatures from the in/out hoses of rad and the thermostat housing.

Heck, taking out the fan is a cake walk, not a big deal to me.

Hope I get the fan by this weekend so I can do it.
 
I usually see 189 around town since getting the UG, but the other day driving back from a few hours fishing and some light wheeling in the sand I was at 192 after airing up and figured getting on the hwy would lower it. Instead it rose to a bit over 200. I've been having to add coolant to the overflow since I got the LC, and am waiting on a new radiator cap to see if that's the problem. I hope so. I don't see any leaks.

And my regular temp gauge never reads above half way.
