Cheers - it hasn't been driven much. Just had baby no.2 last week, so our 'commuting' cars now have 2 baby/booster seats in the back,,,, unfortunately the 40 can't do that.

So I've been speaking with the WA Department of Transport (DOT) about changing the seating capacity. Im not sure whats its like in other Australian states or territories - but in WA its illegal to use the jump seats in the back for ay passengers. My 40 is licensed for 3 people (the front bench seat) as a panel van, so 3 is the maximum number of passengers can carry. If i want to put a baby seat in the front seat, I need to take it somewhere for them to put a "type 2 restraint". If I want to take the family camping or fishing I'm going to need to look at removing the rear seats and installing a rear seat. This is underway so far - I sourced a rear seat from a Jeep Wrangler for $50; I was looking at Suzuki Sierra/Jimny/Vitara seats and Ford Territory 3rd row seats, but they were quite $$$.

After speaking with the guys at DOTs tech section I can basically take the 40 to a number of independent installers (all listed on the DOT website) and once they have installed the seat, it gets signed off by an independent engineer, then it has to pass a DOT inspection. Pre-approval is required from DOT before any of this happens, so i have just finished applying for the approval (and of course, because it needs a DOT inspection, Ive mentioned the drum to disc brake conversion i have done as well).
Info here: https://infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/files/VSB5.pdf

Given that the DOT inspection - i need to sort some other things out on the 40 before hand, like door cards (mine were wrecked) and a few minor things before i get the seats installed. Price wise, it isn't too bad (or too good really!) - $300 for the seats, $600 for the engineer, $120 for DoT inspection, then $300 for the type 2 restraint.

Given it'll have my kids in, I want to make sure everything is done correctly, so getting the car prepped for inspection is a priority. In WA, we do not have any type of annual MOT type of inspection, the only cars that get inspected every year are buses and taxis.

All of that said, i'll hopefully be doing the tappets/valve in the next week or two... I'll post some pics up of that!

Cheers!

Kids safety first, not like when we were kids sliding around the back seat of the old valiant ( no seat belts) getting arses scorched on a 35 degree dayo_O

Got it a bit of a tune up last week - took the valve cover off and adjusted a couple of tappets, also sorted the timing and adjusted the carby. It seems the second jet isn't kicking in and the diaphragm is buggered. Got a mate to show me through the ropes with the tappets, its something id never done before. He's just got back from a trip up north to the Pilbara where a 4WD show had just done a bit of filming and his troopy features 4 mins in for about 5 mins. His troopy is immaculate - well looked after - something i aspire to with mine. Have a look here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2cX6Lbai_U

Spent the best part of this week trying to source just the diaphragm - the Toyota dealers here are just not helpful sometimes. Long story short it's on its way from Japan.

Also now trying to source some door trim - it seems hard to find the door cards in black.

Anyway, enough whinging..!! Gave it a good drive after the tune-up... i love driving it and getting thumbs up from people that pass or make a comment when you've stopped. After the door cards, it'll be time to start on the seats.

I got the vacuum secondary diaphragm for my 2F through Repco, they are quite helpful but i do know the guys very well.
Most Toyota dealers just don't seem interested in anything too old here in Australia.
Your truck looks great, keep up the good work.

Matt
