Bit of a picture dump.... have been painting and assembling stuff most of the mechanical is done (99%) so its just painting and fixing the roof cap left

Removed floor supports, removed rust, weldable primer and plug the old spot welds

Fuel tank is waaaaay easier to put on at this stage :)

pretty cruddy welds but hey they work - notice the very VERY restrictive headers there wasn't any other option with what i had and the budget is too tight for custom header work
IMG_1154.JPG

mod sump for pumpkin clearance
IMG_1317.JPG

tub on, deadening in
IMG_1360.JPG

figuring out placement of battery / airbox etc

Tight fit for exhaust

decided my welding wasnt good enough on mounts so got them done with a bigger welder :)

As it sits today
im not happy with the paint job (cheap paint, cheap gun, amateur painter) but it will protect the metal and i can get it done down the track by someone that knows what they are doing -still looks better than before
for anyone thinking this engine isnt tourqey...

handbreak was on started it in 1st High 2wd rolled forward a metre or so and started going up the wall....ooooops :meh:

Good shot of the 1uz on the frame - had to remove one of the leaves from the springs as the engine is somewhere between 50-70 kg lighter than the 2f
Photo%2010-10-11%207%2049%2053%20AM.jpg

Got some of the door/ roof parts stripped ready to weld up some small holes then paint also straightened my bumper out a bit with a press - its not perfect but will do for now

suprise rust sandwich - didnt think there was any in the rear doors :frown:

I think your paint job is great!

Very nice work. Can you tell me what you used for an air box? If it is something you fabricated, do you have a better picture? Thanks.

Do you have a picture of the clutch slave as it sits on the bell housing mounted to the engine? I'm just curious as to what I'm up against when it comes time to fit the exhaust.

I'm going to explore using a hydraulic throw-out bearing but I don't think it'll be easy to find one that will mount up to the H55F.

Its a bit hard to see but i have basically just cut and angled the pipe straight down so it just misses the slave and goes under the sump - its a hack and im not really happy with it but like i posted earlier i dont really have the budget for custom headers.

Excellent build! Keep up the good work!
I like that your engine sits a few inches lower than mine, and probably an inch back as well!
All the best!

I wasn't criticizing, I held my bell housing up to the motor the other day and realized that the mount for the slave really is in direct line with the exhaust flange. I'm not sure about custom headers, I would think that it's hard to avoid running right past there... Hmmm

Doesn't look like there is an off the shelf hydraulic throw out bearing out there either. I asked Dellow if they knew of one, haven't heard back. Have to work on that one.

Didn't think you were :) - im just not 100% happy with it

i dont know if headers from a 100 would fit as i never tried em but all the 1uz stuff is for autos so it goes right through the slave.

pity about the hydraulic throw out - I wouldnt hold your breath waiting for a reply from dellow.

Actually they did get back to me today. They do sell hydraulic throw out bearings, they are "the Australian agents for McLeod who make thrust races, but they don't make a 38mm bore unit, which Toyota is". :( They went on to say that there may be other brands that might. At least I know what to try and find now.

I'll let you know if I come across something.

Feel Like im getting somewhere now

Roof restored painted cygnus white

Have to put the glass in still but I'm waiting on tint (figured it would be easier to do it with the glass out of the car :)

Great photos and story - you need not apologize for the quality of your work.

Headliner done - not perfect but oh well.
We copied the darts from the original liner but I think because the microsuede is not strechy it didnt work properly - to get it to work without crinkles i think you would need to make them about 1/2 the length.

Other than that is is just 6mm foam stuck to the roof with contact adhesive then same glue again to stick the suede on. Cost was a little over $100 including glue - probably should have just got a replica from the USA :)

Very cool, giving this motor serious thought to replace the 2F in my '81 FJ 45. Much trouble with engine mounts? Plus sorting out the electrics?

Engine mounts were pretty easy - just used 10mm steel right angles, positioned em while the engine was on the crane, welded them up and bolted them to the chassis with grade 8 bolts - I think there is a pick further up.

As for electrics - I found it pretty easy, there is heaps of info on the web for these motors as they are so popular. If you have an uncut loom there are only about 5 or 6 wires that need to be hooked up to relays for the various key positions.

This is probably the best thread I found about installing the engine - this guy knows his stuff, following his directions I have come up with no engine trouble codes at all :)

Got the roof on with the help of my Dad - Also got the passenger door on and sealed up. Used the CCOT 'best' weatherstrip - shape seems perfect but its *VERY* tight at the moment - hopefully it will settle in fairly quickly. Also chucked some dynamat type stuff on the inside of the door which has made a massive difference to the drummyness. It closes with a very satisfying thud now.
Added remote central locking too - just cuz i could :)
