Talking with someone I know locally and he is going to be doing a BHW swap into a 1st gen Tacoma this winter, so I'm hoping to go take some measurements of his engine at some point when it is liberated from the Passat it's in.

In other news, I haven't even had the Jetta for a week yet and there is already an intermittent CEL. Going to have to break out the VCDS.

Passat wagon with a 6-speed manual swap, it has a lot of issues but a friend is picking it up for the transmission and body parts for his manual swapped Passat, I’ll split it with him in return for the engine and wiring harness.
 
Would certainly be a fun car, but unfortunately that era Passat has way more than its fair share of Achilles Heels. This one apparently has lost 4th gear and the diff grinds, which is a common problem with the manual transmissions. They also have wildly overcomplicated suspension with four control arms per side in the front!

Really looking forward to upgrading to the 2.0 TDI engine, this version puts out more torque than any other US-spec 4-cylinder TDI. Stock power is 134hp/247ft-lb, with a tune I'm expecting around 160hp/300+lb-ft. It will get the GTD2060vz turbo and a balance shaft delete, but otherwise remain stock mechanically. This engine was also equipped with a factory pyrometer that feeds EGT information to the ECU to allow it to cut fuel if it starts getting too hot. I'm hoping to retain that feature in the tune as an added safety feature.
 
From what I can tell a cylinder head rebuild would probably solve the engine problems, but swapping to the BHW engine would yield a better layout for the upgraded turbo. The lack of injection pump means the alternator and power steering pump are tucked in closer to the block and head, allowing me to mount the engine more vertically (probably at a 0º angle). This would move the exhaust and intake ports up and away from the brake and clutch master cylinders and give more space for a downpipe.

Besides, the 2.0L engine has slightly more displacement and beefier internals like h-beam connecting rods and bigger crank journals.

I think swap is the answer unless you really need the rig running asap.
 
Thanks! I just want so badly to be able to drive the thing, it doesn't really occur to me to consider any alternative to fixing what breaks. A trip to AK is high on the bucket list someday once things are back together (and I can get enough time off), would love to meet up with you when that happens.
You could at least take a second to lament universal entropy in general and maybe shake your fist at the clouds like the rest of us

the Prado is fun to drive (when it works) [.....] Neither one makes a good, reliable daily/road trip car.
Heresay! Every Toyota drives forever and is immune to mechanical failure of all kinds.
 
There have been plenty of lamentations here! Every Toyota might drive forever, but what happens when it has VW organ transplants? And what about when that transplant is done by an amateur who is learning on the fly?

Hoping to do a better job this time around, tie up a lot of loose ends and actually finish all aspects of the swap.

OEM engine swaps = some lamentations but purist joy

Not cheap, or likely in the US, I know. Maybe cheaper than a Cummins R2.8.

I've been thinking about an r2.8 for a while now, but unfortunately my automatic trans is non-wife-negotiable. I've been reading over the very sparse 1kd swap threads and scratching my chin though.

I think a 1GD would be epic in a Prado. Like you say, obtaining one in the US would be difficult and sorting out the electrical side of the swap is far beyond my capabilities right now. Sadly there aren't many diesel options in the US, it pretty much goes from the 1.9 and 2.0 TDI's to the 4L and up industrial engines like Cummins and Isuzu. There's the odd Mercedes and Jeep diesel in the 2.8 and 3.0 range, but they're fairly uncommon.

I think the quotation marks around the professional bit speak volumes!

The R2.8 would be a nice engine, but probably not easy to adapt to the A440f you have. There are probably adapters out there to use more common, modern automatic transmissions that you could then adapt to the Toyota transfer case.

A 1KD sounds pretty sweet, would do nicely in a Prado and probably work fairly well with an A343f.
 
Well, I feel like an idiot. I had some time this afternoon and decided to start pulling the turbo to check where the turbo gasket had failed and possibly install a copper gasket between the turbo and adapter flange. Got as far as pulling the turbo intake and the compressor outlet pipe off when I realized the junction between the charge pipe and the intercooler had come off.

Turns out all gaskets on the turbo are just fine, it was just losing all boost out the disconnected charge pipe. :doh: I drove it to town and back without incident. Still burns oil from the worn valve guides and seals, but at least it is drivable now until I get around to swapping in the new engine.

The Prado hasn't really been more than a couple of miles from home since early June this year, and has spent a lot of time parked in the weeds next to my shop truck so the mice have moved in. Going to set some traps and then deep clean the interior this weekend.

Hey, at least you found the issue! Good for you!

This is how I got my 2006 Jetta TDI for only $1500 - they thought it had a transmission problem so I offered $1500, they took it. Then I took it home, jacked the car up and went under and hooked up the turbo pipe and have been driving ever since.

If I remember correctly, some 120 and 150 Series Prados had the 1KD and an automatic transmission.

The 1KD is not fast but it has enough power, and it is reliable. I used to drive a 1KD-powered Hilux, and sometimes I miss it.

It might be possible to source a 1GD engine and transmission from a 150 Series Prado or a Hilux. Unlike Isuzu and most Cummins engines, it fits in the engine bay. However, I do not think this engine is in the EPA/DMV lists, and it may be a liability.

Yes, the electrical side (including ECUs) can be hard to manage.

The Prado had become overflow parts storage during the summer while it wasn't being used, so today I pulled all the junk out and gave it a thorough cleaning. Vacuumed all the carpets, wiped the dust and mouse crap off all the hard surfaces with disinfectant, cleaned all the windows. It feels a lot better inside now. I don't plan on driving it too much this winter, but it will be nice to have it available for snowstorms and the occasional small adventure. The Jetta will remain the primary daily driver and road trip car.
