That would be a great way to keep the karma of Jimmy’s barn going!

Time to play a little bit of catch-up. I was able to get the motor crated and shipped successfully down to @roma042987. He got one of his beautiful new old stock 12HT’s buttoned up, so now it’s my turn.

Roma really knows how to multitask!

I love seeing that new old stock 12HT in the background- I’m hoping that my ugly ducking will turn into a beautiful swan.

Little more garage time this evening. Left side of the engine is stripped down. Going to make something tomorrow to store and keep the lifters in order even though they may get replaced anyway. IP is off along with the front timing cover. Next go I'll get the right side stripped down the rest of the way and the timing gears and cam pulled. Taking lots of pictures of bolts to reference where they go back after plating, boring stuff but I love having everything organized. Also starting little piles of parts for degreasing, powder coating, plating, and for the vapor hone.

Timing gears are off and cleaned up. They appear to be in great shape and show no wear. I couldn't find my special bolts last night to remove the main timing gear but I'll get that off soon enough. Camshaft is also ready to come out.

These will be carefully stashed away until reassembly.

Lifters are cleaned up and stashed away as well. These definitely show some wear and will be replaced. I'll get some better pictures of the face but they are starting to have cracking which if left as is will wear the camshaft prematurely. Couple of other small bits stored away until they are ready to go back on the engine.

Oil cooler housing is off. She nasty but not the worst I've seen.

Noticed some debris in the inlet side of the oil cooler.

Not 100% but appears to be bearing material. It's not very magnetic like steel but definitely not plastic either. Will be interesting to see what the bearings look like.

Hardware is starting to pile up. I'm making a pile for clean, needs to be degreased, etc.

It's like putting a puzzle together when you have a big run come back from plating. I've come to be pretty familiar with where most of the 12ht hardware goes but I still like to do this. Snap a photo and email it to myself titled "oil filter housing" etc. Then I can print it off or put it in a desktop folder so when it comes time to sort it all out I have something to reference. After plating it will go in individual ziplocks with sharpied identification of where it belongs on the engine.

Roma, I’m so glad you’re the one rebuilding this motor. While it’s not great to see potential bearing material, I’m really glad that we made the decision to tear this motor down and prophylactically rebuild it. Hopefully we can get another half million kilometers or more out of it. It’ll be interesting to see rings, cylinders, and bearings.

well organized work, keep it up!
on the water/oil cooler cavity, is there no flow from cyl 1 at the front? am i missing something?

P
Thanks.
As far as flow I'm sure there is but those plugs are how all 12hts are.

Got the main timing gear pulled this evening and rotated the engine over so I can pull the pan and rest of the rotating assembly.

Also cleaned up all the aluminum parts in my parts washer. They actually cleaned up surprisingly well. They are clean enough now for some vapor blasting.

I’m practically drooling in anticipation for the vapor blasting outcome, Roma.

Oil pan is off. No paint delamination on the inside, outside of it actually looks pretty good too just really dirty. I'll see how it cleans up because I'd like to leave the factory finish on at least the inside and hopefully outside and just give it a new top coat.

Sorting some more hardware just to make it easier down the road. Oil pan bolts here. 28 of these guys and two nuts.

Pulled the camshaft and got it cleaned up in the parts washer along with the pickup tube, pickup, timing gear and associated hardware. The bigger parts are drip drying overnight and will get properly stashed away in the a.m.

Little goody box is almost full.

I picked up these tupperware containers to store the gears so they don't get bumped against anything or contaminated with anything.

Been preoccupied with other duties last few days and fighting off a cold but just a little more done. Oil pump and rear seal retainer is off and the only thing left is the rotating assembly. I'm going to try to finish cleaning some other parts this evening like the oil pan that's been soaking in the parts washer and hopefully get it all out of the way so I can pull the pistons and rods clean them up and do a good inspection so we know what to order in terms of pistons and bearings.
