Does the brake rotor/caliper have any play in it? I just found a similar situation and it turned out to be that the spindle nuts were loose.
That's the first thing I was looking for when I put it up on jack stands, everything seemed tight, with no play anywhere.

Well after enjoying myself too much for most of the month of July I had some work to do. Coming home from the next river over the hills my 40 started acting funny. It felt like it was missing on a cylinder or 2, he'll maybe even 3. At the same time my VDO tach started climbing from 2,000 rpm up to between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm. Knowing dang well that wasn't right I limped it home and emptied all the fishing gear and crushed beer cans out of the back.

I thought the best place to start would be with the coil/igniter due to the tach hooking up there, seemed like it's the common denominator here.

Coil resistance ohmed out way out of specs.

Replaced it with a cheap one from the local NAPA to get going and test everything out.

Figured it would be a good opportunity to recheck valve lash after I adjusted them a few months ago, along with timing, and tune the carb a little.

While adjusting valves I reached down to grab the crankshaft pulley to turn the engine and the pulley was loose. What the crap? I crawled under to take a look and sure enough, the nut is MIA.

Off to the intertubes I go looking for a NLA nut! (@ToyotaMatt) did show up to the rescue but not before I remembered a nut I found out in the road a month or so ago.

I'll be dammed, walked over to the shelf and there it was. Put it back on and added a little extra love with the breaker bar to snug it up hellatight.

Ran to the store for some stuff, runs like a raped ape again!

From the last month or so.....

Here's what happens when I fall off the grid for a while.

Even find strange things in town.

Great write up - I love it. I was laughing at your ad this morning about the claw nut lost on the road somewhere. Great picture to follow it up with.

I was "home" this summer in Montana - unfortunately for a funeral, but was still good to be home. Keep up the good work!
Yeah I thought for sure that nut was long gone. The one I found in the road I figured was off of a tractor or something around here, I never thought about my own tractor engine until I was wondering what the heck happened.

Sorry to hear that you were here for a funeral, that's not a good way to have to come here.

Thanks as always for the pics! I will be out in Jackson WY next month, I can not wait!
Wanna finish my ls swap while your in town? ;)

Is that an actual picture of you? I realize for as long as I've been following this thread I have no idea what you actually look like - always just assumed you were Walter White.
Yup, that would be me!

I thought that beast was up and running? Maybe I should catch up on your thread again.

Just got back from my place in ID, ran over to fish a couple of days with a HS buddy in Montana. Super smokey, he’s got a fire a couple of miles from his place, we had a good time and fought some fish. Apologies in advance for the 100 series pick but this is what gets me around up there.

Carry on.

That’s a vague phrase- many interpretations. It runs, but it needs a million little things still- front clip, lights, gauges, bleed the brakes… in-laws we’re in town last month, so not a whole lot done unfortunately.

@ryanwk628 here is the best pic I have at the moment.
