Sounds like it's time for a Sniper upgrade 👍
Nah, I like simplicity.

At least for this 40, maybe if I do another one I'll do something different. Probably a hot diesel.

@wngrog @GA Architect have you guys noticed any significant increase in fuel "economy" after the Sniper swap?

Not that I'm going to go that route but it would be interesting to hear some firsthand feedback.

FWIW - Last May, a few months past the initial install, I did log a trip to check mileage. From my post #1,643 ->

Trip time: 10 hours (+/-)
Road time: about 5.5 hours (+/-)
Miles: 200 miles (10% highway & 90% back-roads)
Fuel consumption: 14.4 gallons
Mileage: 13.88 mpg

Is this a gain....probably not enough to mention?

13.8 is nice. I was hitting 14-15 before I put the new tires on. I think the additional mass on those 33"s ran me down to 12ish.

For reference, I run the 32/11.50R15 on my 9" wide OEM rims.

Why worry about MPG ?? Just put more fuel in and smile :)
Not really worried about the mileage, it's the signal that something may be wrong.

I was consistently hitting close to, or better, than 15 mpg, and the drop after the new rubber to 12ish, and the slow decline over the last 6 months or so to under 10. The benefit of logging every tank of fuel and the mileage I get lets me know if something isn't right. Hitting 10 mpg on the last tank, albeit there was some 4wd heading up to the ski area, tells me I may have a problem somewhere.

I am also going to need to drive it for the next couple of weeks to test things out.

There may or may not be some fishing involved in this test driving.

I’ve put on about 10 lbs during the last year, coincidentally, my DD is getting worse fuel mileage now.

If it makes you feel any better, my 79 with sniper and full tune up is just above 10mpg. Mainly highway around 55-60 on 33’s, so not sure a sniper would be much gain for you.

Yeah, but the Akron rust monster has devoured 15 lbs of steel from the DD!

Funny! Uncle Joe also got me a new bullet hose!
Anyhow, do they change the fuels in your part of Montana to a winter blend? I’ve been to revelstoke a couple times on my motorcycle and they were still on their winter blend and the mileage and performance took a dump. Just a thought.

I know with these trucks everyone likes to joke about how MPG doesn’t matter - but it’s a real and viable way to evaluate overall tune and engine health - so good on you for keeping track of it!

I’d love to squeeze a few more MPG’s out of mine, particularly because my closest offroad trail is 106 miles away... 14-15 would be great. As it stands I just can’t quite seem to make it to 200mi on one tank of gas.

With a very “worn in” 283 and a reasonably well-tuned quadrajet, I was pulling 12.5-13mpg if I kept it under 55mph. Around town I got about 11. With the 350 and a quadrajet I get 11.5-12mpg hwy (keeping it under 55) and about 11 around town.

If I get on an interstate, I can hear the secondaries on the quadrajet suck open at just over 65, and at that point I can literally watch my fuel gauge go drop in real time. 😂

I know that the diesel gets a winter blend mixed with it, I lose a solid 4 mpg when they switch over to the winter blend. The gasoline on the other hand I'm not sure about, I only use the non corn syrup fuel.

I have not heard of the gas getting the winter blend here, never really even thought about it either.

MPG doesn't matter to an extent but it's the downward trend that bothers me, luckily I log it all so I can see what's different.
