Those type of magnets aren't all that strong , despite advertised weight ratings . Try something like this :
Magswitch 8100494 MAGSQUARE 165 - Arc Welding Accessories - Amazon.com
These have a set of of tapped holes and will hold to steel on 3 sides - t-handle turns it off/on and yes they can work well picking up metal debris off the floor . At 165lbs , you do have to keep it well away from where you are welding ...

Need to keep those joints to around .020"-.030" at most , never more than your wire thickness on the mig or filler rod . Too much of a risk of expansion .

Sarge

Any tips for getting the gap tighter? The last area I needed to fine tune I traced with a sharpie and used the grinder to shave it down.

rkmtn where did you get the clamps for holding the metal in place to weld it??

Weird posts gone

Well now, with a name like rkymtnflyfisher, how does one abbreviate a bit? You can take the flyfisher out of the rkymtn, but I doubt you could take the rockymountain out of this particular flyfisher...

So, Rocky, the copper part of your gadget; is that just a piece of copper water pipe that you have flattened and if so is that adequate for the job or was that for illustration purposes only.

I used a piece of 3/4" copper pipe, hammered flat for some spots, a piece of 1 1/2" copper buss bar from an electric panel, and a piece of 2" copper pipe pressed flat. Just standard stuff lying around the shop at work, each one I use in different applications.

Ryan will work just fine!

substantial chunk of copper to conduct the heat away

I guess a bigger chunk of copper would dissipate the heat better, it helps tremendously to back the joint so it does not blow out the weld.

BTW, my kids love the animals in your thread, my youngest loves giraffes!

I managed to get a very tight fit on my patches, which I now realise was not so clever. In one instance it caused a boing in the floor panel which I eventually had to solve by putting in a support and tacking it to that.

I love the critters all over the place. You know what? I think there may just be a little giraffe waiting at the airport in Johannesburg that wants to go and live in the Rockies. I'll pm you for her shipping details when I get there later this week.

In the meantime just for her. Hector the petrolhead giraffe and a picture of "How you can turn your dad into a 4x4."

Nice! I just heard some Corb Lund on the way into work this morning!

I quit trying to use markers when tracing out parts , switch to a very finely ground scribe - you could make those joints a near force fit , which is too tight . They do have to have a bit of a gap for expansion when welding , so don't get crazy .

I agree.
