So my intake on my '78 is bone stock, but I have noticed that there is more of a gap on the back side of my carb/air cleaner housing than there is on the front where the top of the housing meets the gasket. I do not believe my housing is tweaked but with this extra gap on the backside I have put a piece of black electrical tape to make sure there is not blowby at this most important juncture. has anyone else experience this? If so how did you get the alignment better? I dont want to bend anything. Is it possible a larger gasket would help? I believe the OEM unit is in place. Thank

Can't see in the pic, but did you forget to put the spacer at the bottom of the carb?

You mean the base plate right? Yes it is there and a gasket as well.

I can get more pics up tomorrow...................

Tom

I have seen a number of Cruisers that had this issue. Usually the three mounting bolts for the air cleaner can be loosened, the gap on the carb centered, and the bolts retightened. Occasionally the center bolt on the carb is bent to add further orientation to the process.

I must confess that over the years I've seen quite a few carbs come in for rebuilding with substantial bends in the center bolt. That's how I know it's not an uncommon problem.

Is it the original engine?
There were some later year 2Fs that had a higher valve cover. That would make the air filter housing sit at an angle.
I'm just throwing this out there, 65swb45 has infinitely more experience than I.

Yeah original motor and intake. Will get more pics after work

Thanks guys. I really hate to have to bend or modify anything. I am wondering if a spacer below the front valve cover mount of th air cleaner housing would help with "tilting" it back? Any ideas?

@45Kevin my manu date is 10/78 so it is a later in the year model for sure

Curious if you could fold the hood back against the windsheild and get a look down the carb for straightness of the rod and go from there.
Or if there is any adjustment messing with the nut on top of carb and turning rod in or out a couple threads.
Mark nailed it as usual.

Pics today after work................

You can possibly try this:
1. Remove all three wing nuts and washers
2. Loosen all three clamps
3. Open air cleaner housing top & inspect air filter
4. Reinstall air cleaner housing top and adjust as needed
5. Reinstall washer and wing nut at carb first
6. Reinstall other two washers and wing nuts
7. Snap all three clamps down
8. Step back and see if that made any difference...If not, at least you were able to check your air filter.

Just a thought. :wrench:

not to hijack, but which vent is best to leave open on the air cleaner?

the front air intake or the bottom vent of intake located by the manifold?

I currently have my air cleaner opened to only accept the front air by the bezel area thinking this is the lower ambient temp of the two options.

Desomogged 2F

@jasonbraswell not hijacking at all bud. My '78 2F is also desmogged as per Jim Chenowith at TLC. I have the air coming in thru the front air intake by the bezel. Bottom intake was for cold staring and used some type of wax device to open and close. My '78 does not have that flap but my brothers '76 does and we run the air in the same way as my '78

@65swb45 just wondering if you have seen this difference between the height of the valve cover on the late in the run 1978's? Thanks again Mark
