After market seat heaters in an FJ40?

The pads themselves-you can see why the bit that gets attached in the middle can't be used.

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree. Now where to put the bracket.... Sometimes I do miss my US spec fj40 with a centre consol.

Do you use your ashtray? You could put in a false wall in it with the switches mounted in it. They would be hidden when it is closed.

I've sold hundreds of sets over the years with zero failures. Can be trimmed for any application from 40 bench seats to motorcycles.

I offer an extension harness for those who like to have dash mount or hide switches or console mount for middle row seating.

The rocker switch is Lo/Off/Hi

Harness is complete and you only need to supply power and ground.

Those that want to use OE switched, you can make it work.

Josh,

What about the a/c controller? You could put a blank plate in and install the switches and electrical, plus keep some stock looks.

I'm going to use mine for that exact purpose, but I'm not sure what aux switches I need at the moment.

For switch placement in 40's, we use the lower dash lip. It's out of sight giving the stock look and out of the weather for those than run with the top off. It's easy to reach and easy to remove with no holes on the dash face.

-drill hole with step drill
-touch up metal
-install switch

I just installed one of the carbon fiber weave seat heater kits. I got it off eBay for about $70. I opted for the one with the Carling style switches. I'm mounting the switches to the front of the Tuffy Console where the cup holder attaches. I mounted two 10A fuses in unused positions on the FJ62 fuse panel I'm using. I made sure to use a switched power source to keep from draining the battery if one is left on.

I also found an issue with the pleat on the bottom seat cushion. Rather than remove the pleat, i just trimmed the heater element shorter and will not have heat at the front of the bottom seat cushion. It was a compromise, but I was worried that the seats would look wierd without the pleat in the cushion.

I won't know how well they work until the truck is put back together. I just disassembled it again to tackle body and paint work.

I recently put in a pair of carbon heaters in my 79 fj40. On mine and I suspect yours you can cut holes or boxes in the heaters for the pleats to pass through as long as you don't cut the leads that run down the sides.

If you have carbon fiber version which most are, then you can cut a slit for the "listing" to be pulled through the element and hog ringed back to the wire support through the cushion.

The instructions should have outlined this.

Being carbon fiber you can cut slits for installation with compromising the element.

Man, I sure wish I'd known I could trim them before I was done recovering. I would like to have the pleat but a bit late now. Still, it looks pretty good even without it but now I know for the passenger seat.

Shane, I was thinking about mounting on the lower lip of the dash but I kind of like Dan's idea. I also like the ash tray idea but I use mine for parking change. Hmmm.

Were there no instructions with the heaters? Odd if not.

I like the under dash lip as ashtrays are hard to come by.

Shane,

No instructions, oddly. I looked again just now to be sure and there is nothing but an invoice. Hmmm.

I'll recover the seat next time I'm in boulder as there is a great upholsterer there (and merely average ones here in Santa Fe). Not real happy with the upholster job anyway. So, I can have it done right in boulder. I'll probably get some from you for the rear seats.

Hey Shane,

You could have chucked them in the last shipment I am getting from you (heater repair and blower motor stuff - you legend!). I think I found some instructions on the internet just now so thank you for the great offer, but I'm going to be sure to do it better on the other side. I will wait to do the other side until I can get it to Boulder to have the guy I trust do both seats; I'm not letting any of the folks here in Santa Fe touch that passenger seat as it is perfect in every way. The driver's seat was nearly perfect... until I gave it to the upholsterer.

But, I take solace that here in NM the child labour laws are reasonably slack, so I can just enjoy a beer while my son works on the Cruiser; gotta get him to earn his keep ya know:

You have an LX, very nice!

Between ebay names, forum names and names on credit cards I can't keep anyone strait.

Online instructions should be sufficient. I'm planning on having then a PDF on the site.

Edit. It just clicked who you are. You are the legend, sir.

Who else can paint a '83 in a storage unit? ;-)

Shane

Legend merely in my own mind Shane. I'm flattered that we've known each other since 1993 and you still use the word legend in the same sentence I'm in; I've only been married for ten years and still can't convince my wife.

But then, to quote H.L. Menkin: "A man may be a fool and not know it, but not if he's married."

LOL, me either. I try convincing her on a daily basis. Doesn't work.

I think I was driving a red '82 40 then.
