Good afternoon Folks!
Using the materials kindly provided by you people as well as the FSM here on the forum, we have identified that the distributor G pickup coil resistance is a whopping 1.5 Mega Ohms!

So, I've ordered a replacement distributor from Rock Auto as well as other general tune up materials, plugs, wires, etc.

Hopefully I get everything installed this weekend and I will report back!
Thank you all!

He went and checked nearly everything you fine folks suggest here on the forums, as well as applied the diagnostic materials that ALLDATA provides those who are willing to pay.

I will add, that although I am the owner and have mechanical experience, these diagnostics are being performed by a professional mechanic. All the information I post, assuming I'm transposing correctly, is being tested with a professional Snap-On multimeter, as well as Snap-On digital oscilloscope.

You posted that the mechanic performed these diagnostics but did he ever run the code check that only requires a paper clip or piece of wire. Since this is an OBDI vehicle that simple test procedure gives the information to pinpoint the problem area.

Yes! Interestingly enough, there are no codes present. Given that there is no actually broken circuit, I think that makes sense.

Good news!

I had a feeling you need more technical support so I left the thread here. This site is a great resource for any year Land Cruiser and even some other vehicles.

Please reply when it is all fixed. We always want to know the whole story

Update! The distributor was indeed bad! After an exhaustive process of which included ultimately replacing the distributor, plugs & wires, all belts, heater hoses, radiator hoses, and push rod cover gasket, my FJ is running beautifully!

I do however have one remaining problem. Here in the lovely state of California, I have to pass an emissions test on this beast.

I spent all afternoon attempting to set the timing properly, however I could not for the life of me get a clear enough view of the timing window to set it properly to 7 degrees BTDC. I've read a couple of write ups on the subject here, and no amount of words helped me see that damned mark!

Eventually I gave up and set the timing by ear, and nose (smelling the tailpipe for running rich.) I'm very happy with the engine's performance, but am fearful she will not pass SMOG.

Thoughts?

Thank you all very much!

In colorado we have run two bottles of heat, premium gas and make sure you drive 20 minutes before pulling into the test site. Not sure if that is applicable to California standards

I am glad you solved your problem and really appreciate your coming back with the answer. That saves someone else in the future looking for an ECU some other things to check. This site is a great resource come back and use the FAQ sticky thread, search feature or post up any additional issues you might have.

I am hopeful someone here can help you more with the California emissions question

Update #2!: Got the Cruiser smogged (SMOG, California Emissions Testing) today and she passed with flying colors! I silently watched as the evaluating technician either didn't have the patience, or the skill to verify the timing.

Thank you all for your help! I look forward to utilizing this forum to its fullest potential!
Cheers!
