Here is one for sale in Denver:
1997 Lexus LX450 same as Landcruiser

Spoke with the owner - he said he has 4 cars. This one has not been driven much - in fact he said it's been sitting unused for almost a year (that can't be good for a vehicle, eh?!).

Anyway, he says the truck is bone stock except for the big 33 inch tires (Toyo Outlander?!).

Thing is - he has no lift on the truck... I thought a minimum lift is required for that size of a tire (he said it's 285?!). Won't this tire be rubbing when you wheel the vehicle?!

He has no lockers and claims he never had it off road - wanted to I guess, but plans have changed.

One thing that concerned me when speaking to him: I asked if it was consuming any oil and he said: No. I asked if he had to add any oil in between oil changes and he said: No. I asked if he had checked the oil level and he said: NO... :( He claims that he drove this truck very little - about 1K between oil changes and performed oil change every 3-4 months. Hmmm....

I didn't ask him about the maintenance records... soemting tells me there won't be any... but I'll probably go see it this weekend. He didn't act like he was anxious to sell - in fact he acted like he was barely interested in speaking to me... weird.

Anyway - I really wonder about those big a$$ tires... they look cool - not knowing any better I'd guess they would be rubbing some, so I wanted to ask y'all for some opinions.

Thx,
James

Hey, the rubber may rub a little with a fair bit of axle articulation, not a bad looking cruiser though, maybe a tad pricey without lockers though, or actually a tad pricey if it did have them. Make sure you compare book value before paying or negotiating, dont get sucked in over nice looking tires, you can put them on any cruiser.

Im guessing you asked if it had the magic dial on the side of the steering column?

Good luck and welcome aboard!

Seems a little overpriced but it is a very nice lexus, damage multiplier and plastic sliders would have to go. No lift needed for 285's. My 93 with 17 year old stock suspension runs a 255/85 (slightly taller than 285/75) with no rubbing to date.

You'd have to wheel it hard to ever have 33" tires rub on a stock suspension. Sounds legit to me.

No, it doesn't - he says that in the ad. WIsh it had the lockers though... Yeah, I wouldn't pay what he's asking.

285/75/16 fit fine on a stock rig, may rub in "extreme" articulation. They are not really "big ass tires", they are basically only one step up from the stock size. As far as the oil, if he doesn't add oil, and the oil light doesn't light up between changes, it probably isn't consuming too much. The oil level light will generally light up at about 2 quarts below full.

Looks like he has some kind of platform or drawer system in the back of the rig...

Thx for clarification - is there any concerns with speedo being off a bit given the larger size tires?! Guess if it is, it can't be off by much...

I have 285 75 16 on my LX and they don't rub.
The speedo is off a little. At 60 the GPS has the speed at 64.

I would get the CarFax on it. Just as a data point, I bought my 95 in '08 with 131k on the dial for $6100. Body was immaculate and he had every record. The record he didn't have was any front axle service and when I asked him if he had done it he looked at me like I had one eyeball. I don't think the general docs are good at telling people what should be done in this regard. That ended up costing a lot but in the grand scheme (what new ones cost), it is relatively small.

The nice thing about the CarFax is you should see the mileage at points when it is emissions tested. And if it changed hands a lot, it is a red flag for a number of reasons.

It is a Lexus and they are worth more, plus, I bought mine when people were fleeing from gas guzzlers. Still, $8800 seems too high.

I agree completely - I'm in the in the habit to pay full asking price just because of shiny paint or cool wheels. We'll see if he wants to play...

Great looking truck!

My rig has 220K and is consistent in giving me an oil light at 1 quart low...right at the add oil line on the dipstick. I was using about 1 qt every 3000 miles.

She's in having the head gasket replaced and a valve job...looking to eliminate oil consumption all together.

That price would be right about what I'd expect to see in the Seattle area. Remember, the values on these rigs went up since gas came back down. I bought my rig in October 2008 and within a year the blue book was about $1500 higher. Gas was $4+ at time of purchase and under $3 a year later.

If it is in good shape, that would be a real nice deal at $8k, at least in Seattle.
