I agree completely - I'm in the in the habit to pay full asking price just because of shiny paint or cool wheels. We'll see if he wants to play...

$8800 seems fine to me if it's exactly what you're looking for. That said, there's no reason *not* to negotiate. IMHO, it's much better to pay $8800 for a good truck versus $5k for one that can give you hassles down the road.

I figure, if you follow this board, you'll put in at least $1500 in preventative maintenance on top of the purchase price. :)

I'd rather have a good truck with stability and options where it was most difficult and expensive to fix (read: drivetrain), at a lower price, allowing extra budget to fix easy things exactly the way I wanted...(read: interior, amenities)

(Not to say that I have investigated either the $8800 truck or the $4500 to the extent needed to make this kind of call regarding these trucks specifically---just hypothetical)

Click on my member name and check the album...I have some of the OEM Michellins and the 285 BFG AT's

No rubbing at all.

Thanks!! It has been really fun to work on. The interior was real dirty, but I have since cleaned, removed woodgrain, and put new carpet in.

... and put new carpet in.

You bought brand new carpet kit or swapped it from another donor?! I've noticed how spotless that inside looked.

Got one of Dans last front kits.

Ah, right... if I had looked closer at your sig I'd have seen that... :) Say, what is "Driver's seat extension" - in your sig....?! BTW - I may go look at this LX over the weekend - will report back if I see it. Hope I won't find an empty coolant reservoir like the rest of them (I'm 5 out of 5 on that... :frown: )

Its the Land tank seat mod, extra room 1"+...I would be glad to look at some in Ga or Al if you find any...I have a decent idea of what to look for since I have done all the maint on mine.

Thanks for the offer to look at one in your area.

I'll look for that mod too - it sounds interesting - I feel a little cramped in the front everytime - and I bump my head, but that's a whole separate mod, I'm sure.... hehe.

Anyway - thx again for the offer.

I checked out that LX450 this evening in person. A young kid owns it - he also has another Lexus RX and a 2005 4Runner - 'tweaked out' with custom rims, K&N filter, number of other blingy things I don't recall.

He's the third owner - originally the car was corporate lease in Tampa, FL. His buddy bought it and brought it to CO and he bought it from him 3 years ago. Says that he'd put in less than 15K miles on the truck in the last 3 years.

Inside, the truck is showing some wear - the driver's seat side leather is ripped. I don't think the owner has a vacuum cleaner... Once again, a modern stereo (single) in a large opening resulting in a single empty bay... tacky. It's been a family car for them he says, though this somewhat contradicts the meaty 285's that he'd put on... he said he works too much to off road and has not gone wheeling, though he's been through a couple of snow storms in it and liked the way it handled them all.

Under the hood the truck looked pretty clean - there was one rubber hose on top of the valve cover that had some oil around it - he said he just fixed it recently... The engine ran quietly and evenly with no surprises. Once again, however, I find the overflow coolant bottle bone dry! (it's 6 for 6 now... :frown: ). When I pointed it out he said he never checks it... he never added any coolant - ever, so that's somewhat of a concern.

The truck has a remote start and an alarm - aftermarket. The truck starts right up, it's smooth in acceleration but the brake pedal had long travel and felt spongy. I didn't notice any pulling when driving and the birfs were quiet when turning hard even in Low range, though both knuckles were wet and greasy (once again) - he said he never serviced them...

One odd thing during the drive - when I accelerated, I heard this subtle whistling noise coming from the back - sounded like from the tail pipe or from the muffler - he said they all do this, but I have not heard that on any of the ones I test-drove.... so I don't believe him.

He told me that he bought the truck because his father had owned one when he was a kid and he wanted a Lexus as soon as he could afford it - now that he'd owned one for some time he's ready to move on (and they have a total of 3 SUVs).

He told me that when he first bought the truck he 'base lined' it himself - he rattled off: oil, filters, replaced diff fluids, flushed the coolant. It seems to me that he's done nothing since then except (maybe) change oil in this thing.

The rear cargo area has a work platform built in (he built it himself) with a large drawer that you can pull out - seems kind of functional. THere was a big amplifier in the back under that platform which he'd installed along with some sub-woofers... that kind of turned me off. He said that he likes his tunes.

See the pics attached - is that a factory gasket (in red) in that second photo?!

All in all - the good as I see it:
o Fairly low mileage (132K)
o Good overall condition (not great) mechanically and cosmetically
o Solid new tires
o No signs of abuse

The bad:
o Questionable maintenance history
o Some neglect

Overall I like the vehicle - it looks nice and I could probably make something better out of it - I just don't have a very warm and fuzzy feeling about it - just got this feeling that he just really didn't care for it much. Would I be buying a 'problem child'?!

What does the group think about it from that desciption?!

THx,
James

You will find the driver's leather worn or ripped on a lot these rigs now, they are just at that age. Mine just ripped a few months ago. IME, it is common to have some oil around the PCV hoses. I did a coolant flush about 2 years ago, and haven't added any coolant yet, but my coolant overflow bottle level is where it is supposed to be, not sure on that one. The whistle from exhaust during acceleration is very common, surprised you haven't heard it yet. There are a ton of threads/posts about this, he is not lying. Nothing about that rig scares me, I would certainly consider it. I might top off the coolant, and make sure there aren't bubbles in there (do a search, can be sign of HG failure).

I'd agree with the previous poster about the HG and coolant issues and make very sure things are ok. Front axle service will be pricey or a pain to do yourself so factor that in while discussing price.
I recently got my LX in the Denver area for about $2K less with a great service record, clean interior, and good exterior. I'd say work on the price A LOT.

And WHAT the heck IS that whistling?

John

Unfortunately, you've gotten a bit of a mystery truck. You can ask Lexus for the service records, providing it was serviced by Lexus.

A few minor things to note:

1. Rear main seal and/or oil pan arch seal leakage.
2. Radiator may have been replaced, regardless it's missing the foam that sits on the front top portion of the radiator.
3. Hose from valve cover to throttle body doesn't look stock.

Appreciate the sharp eye and the inside track on this one... many thanks. I have a feeling he's not telling me a whole lot more aobut this thing.

Regarding service, he mentioned 'Grease Monkey' for oil changes on the phone. Then when I saw him in person he mentioned the dealer did the service - but no service records were kept... dang it. It's a nice truck, but it may be too much risk for a rookie like me....

I'll need to get over it and keep searching - thx all.
