Friends, I have a question for you. I am helping by a buddy with his cruiser and came across these brakes:

Front left rotor:

FL brake pad:

I’m guessing he had debris between his rotor and pad?

We have new rotors, do we need new brake pads too or will these wear down evenly after some time?

I would just change the brake pads because your already there. But I'm guess if your can resurface them somehow, it'll work.

Also I'm not a real mechanic. I'm just spit balling.

New pads and do both sides :p

Here’s a shot of the gummed up diagnostics port

And a little wtf moment this morning. Fixed it ASAP. Both seat anchors weren’t installed at all.
The oil pressure reads this high upon start up and settled down after about 15 min. Is this normal for these engines?

1) A little electrical contact cleaner should take care of that gummed up port.

2) I've got a 94 and my oil pressure has never read that high. It's always towards the top of the middle segment.

3) It looks like you need a valve cover gasket soon or you won't be able to keep it clean. With all the other work you have planned, you may want to start there, removing the valve cover and throttle body, and then remove the top half of the intake manifold. That gives you a lot of room to work on hoses, vacuum lines, fuel lines, etc.

Welcome to the forum! Everyone knows 1994 is the best year...

Thanks bro! That post was from almost 4 years ago. I did have a short hiatus, though so I’ll take the welcome!

Yeah, I'm with Broski.

New pads, both sides. They'll come in a kit that includes 2 pairs anyway.

For the cost vs effort of going back in there, don't F about with those pads
Thanks fellas. I figured that was the answer. Back to ordering more parts! Merry Christmas and happy new year!

Actually, it looks like the last "brake job" was throw in new pads and let them wear in to match the rotors. The old pads that had been taken out were metal to metal and heavily grooved, but to save time and money, they chose not to turn or install new rotors because they are "inboard" and it's a lot of work to do them.

If you're installing new rotors, install new pads.

Happy to report I have about 5k miles post new short block and top end refresh. I’m about to change the oil again and send the second sample off to BS. The first sample showed high aluminum. Makes sense. Let’s see what’s this one says.

Need to rotate tires too. Turns out I need a new jack, my Arcan gave up the ghost during use, luckily no one and nothing was hurt/damaged.

Two questions:
1. Do you rotate all 5 tires or skip the spare?
2. What kind of jack do you use for your lifted cruiser?

I’ll be hunting for a jack with decent height, I’ll add a block of wood for more height. Would be good if it was relatively portable too.

As for fuel mileage, I was averaging about 10 MPG for about the first couple thousand miles and I’m now reporting 11 MPG! Not bad for 37s /4.88s.

I am taking her to Roanoke, VA to meet a buddy from lives past and do some catching up. It’s about 3 hours each way so, this will be a good confidence building run.

This is a my boy…14 y/o driving the cruiser…my girls also want to drive the cruiser. Need to get more cruisers.

Opinions will very, I like to rotate in the 5th tire.
At home I use the floor jack on the trail I use the OEM jack on a block of wood and a @LandCruiserPhil jack adapter.

Yep, I completely forgot about the LCP adapter. Thanks, Rich!

The badlands jack from hf is pretty nice.

Yup was going to say the same thing. Just picked this up from Harbor Freight. Got tired of my old jack just barely being able to lift the tires off the ground. With this extension I believe the lift height is like 30"

I like to rotate in the 5th tire as well. Always feels like a mental challenge to figure out where to rotate each tire but it helps tire wear a little I think.

While the Badland jack looks nice it's not something I would want to carry around in my rig all the time.

I have the Daytona floor Jack from HF. It’s a copy of a snap-on Jack that’s made in the same chinese factory. That’s right. Read that on a tool forum. It’s identical. It has grease fittings for Pete’s sake! Lift high but has a fairly low profile for fitting under your low rider.

I see no sense in letting that expensive tire just rot away on the rear bumper.

Glad to hear about the huge improvement in mpg.

Can I borrow your 80 for a week this summer???

No, it's for in the shop for me.

I like these options. Wasn’t sure if HF is a go-to. I’ve I only been there a couple of times for some cheap fittings. I’ll swing by there today and grab a jack…I will rotate all 5 tires….Steve, you bring up a good point, no sense in wasting the rubber. I’ll bring my daughters out to do the heavy lifting.

You can take my cruiser, when you learn how to keep all four wheels planted on the ground….no flips first.

Thanks for the opinions, @ikarus I like your wok space, very tidy!

Are the first 2 steps a different size then the rest in that purdy garage ?

I've really changed my opinion about Harbor Freight. When I was in my 20s I would just go buy cheap stuff at Harbor Freight cause I didn't have much money and told myself that when it broke, I would buy something from a legit brand because that meant I was using it enough. I went through a bunch of HF stuff and seen my fair share of junk (don't buy torque wrenches there haha) but over the years I've seen their quality improving. Now they have a couple different lines of tools. The Pittsburgh stuff isn't amazing but the Icon tools are really pretty nice.

And yes like @baldilocks said, a lot of people are saying that HF stuff is very similar to Snap-On stuff or could be from the same factory. I have zero hands-on experience with Snap-On so I can't say but I've been using HF jacks for a long time with no problems. This HF Badlands jack looks like a copy of the Pro Eagle offroad jack but actually seems to have better features, and is also probably made in the same factory.

Their smaller jackstands did get recalled a few years ago because of some catastrophic failures but the new jackstand design seems solid. I've been using 12-tons for 10 years now with no issues.

I was shopping around for a new tool chest and hadn't even considered HF until I stopped in one day and was blown away by the quality of their new US General modular tool chests. Better than Home Depot stuff in my opinion, with some cool features.

Long story but I ripped out my old stairs when I remodeled my garage and wanted to DIY some new ones. I don't have too much experience with carpentry so I was learning as I went. When I was just about done with the stairs I decided I wanted to add a surface mounted cable railing but all my plans had used 2x boards for the steps on some steel stringers. Couldn't increase the height of the landing or modify the stringers so I couldn't add thicker stair treads. I didn't know if that would be enough depth for the railing to mount to so I threw a couple extra 2x pieces on just the outer edge for the railings.
