So, When your running your 8274 at full speed (No Load, just Reeling it in our out). Once you let go of the Switch, Dose it take 2-3 Revolutions for the winch to slow down to a stop?

when im running mine it is hard to control because one small "bump" on the switch goes almost one revolution..

Could my Clutch Brake be Shot?
Solenoids? Id like to Get some new ones regardless (30 years old atleast), Whats the best route on those?

Yes, this is normal when it is running at full speed, no load. You need to be mindful of this and not get yourself, someone else, or something hurt/damaged with the cable.

It is just like anything; the more time you spend operating it, the more you will learn the nuances of the 8274.

Unless your brake is not holding under load, there is not likely anything wrong with it.

The brake is not for no-load control or free-spool control. The purpose of the brake is to prevent the cable from unwinding while stationary, under load.

Solenoids?

Going with Warn units will require you to update your controller from a three wire to a five wire, as they no longer support the old can-style solenoids that were used many years ago. You can find after market solenoids at different winch repair outfits on line, just make sure they are continuous-duty and not the ‘ford starter motor’ generic garbage. Solenoids sticking in the on position is not a fun scenario.

Hi All:

Yes, definitely true about the M8274 when retrieving cable without a load! I usually just "blip" the in button, not holding it down for more than a second or two at a time.

Alan

Just read that the Warn 34971 contactor is made by Albright. Very heavy duty, but pricey. Might be something worth looking into.

Thanks guys! It seems like its working great, but i figured i would ask.. Im geting used to it!

anyone use the 12v guy ones? http://12voltguy.com/web/index.php?...n=com_virtuemart&Itemid=43&vmcchk=1&Itemid=43

I also need a new cover, but im not sure about the Aluminum one.. Seems Plastic would be best to house electronics that are not insullated.

Also, Motor Upgrade? mine is the original, and when i pulled it apart it looked fine, but sometimes it groans on ruff pulls..

I replaced my 32-year-old (still working) 2.5 hp original with this 4.5 hp motor from DB Electrical: NEW 12V Winch Motor for WARN Keyed Shaft HEAVY DUTY 8274 LPL0015: LPL0015 / AMT0404 - KEYWAY OPN FCE MTR DB Electrical Starter-Alternator

It's Chinese-made but has worked great for me so far. You can also buy a new Bosch motor that Warn uses in the 9.5ti winches for about $600.

Hi there, 1911, how can you assure that DB Electrical motors are chinese made?

Thanks

I guess have to take their word for it, since there is a sticker on the motor that says "MADE IN CHINA". :)

Jejejeje

I bought the same motor but mine didn't have that sticker

Thanks my friend

Maybe you bought an older/better one than I did, and they changed suppliers - I just bought mine about a year ago.

I have the same motor as 1911 and bought it about 3 months ago, had a Made in China sticker on it. I have no complaints. The first one was i ordered was damaged but a quick call to DB and they UPS'd another one to my door free of charge.

As far as the solenoids, when I rebuilt my 8274 I tried to cheap out on the solenoids and called 12voltguy and he recommended the solenoids sold by DBelectrical. i tried those but they didn't work out. I ended up taking Posers advice and buying a new control pack w/ the new style solenoids and a new remote. I'm glad I did. I bought the new control pack for about $220 or so.

i would recommend the Warn solenoids but thats my opinion.

I got the new solenoid box and controller through IPOR for ~$230 to my door. I thought it was a pretty good deal.

I just finally took the $150 8274, that I bought a few months ago, off the shelf. I confirmed that the motor was not working (said "BAD" on it in silver paint) and will take it down to the local re-winder to see if he can do anything with it before I take the plunge on a new piece. If anyone is interested, I can post when I find out how that goes.

funny i stumble upon this after i got mine installed, i almost last my hand after i let go of the button when it was close to being wound in all the way, they are hella fast
