This winch was only 2 years old. It sat outside with the truck unused for over a year while I was away. I guess the clutch assembly seal wasn't sealing and rain seeped into it. Lesson learned: buy a cover for it and don't trust the factory seal!

edit: the gears cleaned up with a wire wheel. Took everything apart, cleaned, painted, new seals and oiled. I'll be covering it up from now on.

Wow. Bummer. Definitely motivation to use the cover.

Those gears will clean right up with a little blasting, you could probably do electrolytic rust removal as well. I've got some extra needle bearings for that top gear from my rebuild if you need them, just shoot me a PM.

Sucks to have to deal with :frown:

That is very sad. I would talk to Warn about that.

On the top picture (The clutch engagement T handle ) Should have lots of Greese from the factory.

I understand that it was out in the weather. Even if there was no silicone there it should have taken many years to do that.

Many 8274s are left out in the elements and I have never seen anything like that before, except for the one that was found in the Gulf of Mexico

That is very sad. Looks like its a brand new winch. Sucks man

My new one - about 2 years old and virtually un-used - no longer runs because of water intrusion into the motor.

Brushes rusted into place and tension spring broken, oil in gear housing contaminated... and my other Warn which is going on 22 or 23 years old is just fine.
