91 FJ80 Signing in for the first time

TLDR: noob bought a 91 FJ80 auto with 200k miles and wants to know what to do. Specific questions in post, please read.

As fate would have it, I just purchased a '91 3FE FJ80 Automatic with an estimated 200k for $1600 and am happy :) to join the ranks of Cruiser owners. Will post pics as soon as it stops raining.

About Me:

I've owned a number of toyo's before, first a 88 corolla DX, then 94 4runner, but am new to Cruisers. Didn't have the 4runner for long and didn't do much with it, so I'm a relative noob to this whole thing.

I've rebuilt the top end on several smaller vehicles. I've done a number of other general and in-depth repairs to dozens of other vehicles, and feel confident in my diagnostic abilities and mechanical capabilities. I am also a sponge, so please if any of you like to give advice on these babies my ears are open, talk away.

I've got a professional mechanic next door who loves Toyota's and another 2 doors down that drives truck, rebuilds old pickups as a hobby, and has every tool imaginable in his garage. I consider myself good friends with both. Hopefully will continue to be after this latest purchase.

I'll post more personal stuff in my bio. Is there another place to get to know people better? I'd love to get to know people based on local area and similar interests.

Here is what I know about my new rig:

I am officially the 3rd owner. Date issued on my title was Aug 98, it needs an alignment, and has been running considerably smaller tires than the speedometer is set for and appears to have for a considerable amount of time, possibly since before the last set. Current set has about half the life left. Speedometer was saying 70-75 when I couldn't have been going more than 50.

Body has very little rust. There are 2 2" circles on the tailgate. There are some small specks in a few couple of spaces, but no serious corrosion. One of the reasons I went for an 80 and not a 60-62. I also like having power windows, and the 3rd rows seats. There is apparently no rust on the frame what-so-ever. This was a big point for me. The exhaust however might need replacing soon.

It leaks a little from around the water pump, I already have a replacement pump in the back waiting to be put in. I don't know about oil leaks. exhaust appears to be clean, there is a little black soot in pipe, possibly running rich, but doesn't appear to be too bad.

  1. I want to first get it legal. Hopefully, that just means the alignment.:p
  2. Then, I want to do a bunch of preventative maintenance.
  3. Next, comes beefing up reliability.
  4. Eventually, I want to modify but only as improvement.
I bought this because of what it is and because I'm tired of fixing things that aren't worth fixing.

Here are my questions/plans
:

  1. flush and replace all fluids and filters.
Q: What is the best way to flush? What should I be putting in? What is all involved?
    First step, please be thorough.
  2. Check and likely replace all radiator hoses.
Q: What should I be looking for?

  3. Check and likely replace vacuum hoses.
Q: Is this necessary and what should I be looking for?

  4. Replace all Ignition wiring and plugs.
Q: Is there a specific brand of cables/plugs best suited for this vehicle? What is your experience?

  5. Check for any worn electrical wiring.
Q: What are some common wear/fail points?

  6. Clean throttle body.
Q: Good link to process: thread, tutorial, pictorial, videos?

  7. Should take the injectors out and have cleaned? What is the process for this? How much cost am I looking at?

  8. Will be replacing belts with water pump.
Anything else I should be replacing while in there (pulleys, etc)? Good links for what's involved in this process?
I've heard it can be a bit of a pita.
  9. Side mirrors shake. Already read the post on how to fix. Thx whoever posted, you're awesome:clap:. Will say so in appropriate thread after their fixed.
  10. Finally, what tools should I have in the garage? What should I have in the wagon?
Anything else I should be doing right at first? I plan for this to be an overland/camping and a limited part time daily driver, so most things will be kept stock. I want to maximize my fuel economy, but keep a set of decent all terrains on the wheels. I'd like some good recommendations on a tire and size. Rather not re-gear unless that would improve the vehicle for my intended purposes.

If you are still reading by this point, here are my long term ideas:

My ultimate goal for this is for it to be my base camp for some isolated backpacking trips. I'm a fanatical lightweight (not ultralight) backcountry backpacker.

  1. Lightweight roof rack. No heavy rack or roof top tent. I'm a hammock camper, so I might rig something so I can hang off the wagon, but I don't want to put too much weight up there. I'll just be putting things like packs, sleeping bags, some basecamp equipment. Stuff that won't fit in the vehicle.
    Q: Any Thoughts?
  2. I want to clean up the tow package, it's covered in rust. I want to keep the tow package. I realize my v6 isn't going to pull anything significant, but a trailer too and from the hardware store to keep the home-front in good repair is important to me. So I plan on sanding/grinding down past the rust and repainting.
Q: Should I just replace it?

  3. I don't want to add much if any weight to it, but would like put a bumper capable of a winch on the front. I'm not sure I want to go full ARB bull bar. For a winch I'm a big fan of using AMTSTEEL instead of cable. Some of you might argue with me over that, if you do, please post any experience you've had with AMSTEEL and not what you have heard, I'm pretty firm on that.
    Q: Advice on bumpers?
  4. Should I put on aftermarket aftermarket suspension? I've heard good things about OldMan EMU - Is it worth it, how does maintenance compare (especially in the field)? I want reliability as much as performance.

  5. I want to put in a second battery system for any additional lights, compressors, etc.
Q: Good idea? What's the best? What are your experiences? Good thread?
  6. Snorkel?
  7. Air Intake improvements? Thoughts?
  8. Air Compressor? I'm thinking mostly for tires, but also see next.
  9. I don't plan on crawling unless necessary.
Q: Are air lockers overkill in this situation?

  10. Any other pieces of advice or ideas?
If you've read this far thank you. I apologize for being so incredibly long winded, but I hope for some good answers. I really look forward to a lot of reading.

Wow, quite an intro post and no pics! :D. Welcome to 'Mud. Your questions can't be answered in this thread because it's the registry. You may want to copy you post to a new thread.

If u type in the search you might find others who already asked and got answers....this forum has people who know cruisers better than mr. Toyota. ..good luck

Thanks. Not sure how long it'll stay that color, but I do like it much better than the standard black or white cruisers that I see in my area. If I decide to repaint it down the road, I'll probably keep the color scheme.

Hi guys...
I'd like to introduce myself to this board as I am know an owner of a 1992 Toyota HDJ80.
Im Tobi, 26 and from Germany. Before the J8 I drove a 4.0 Grand Cherokee.
My new toy now has 247,773KM, a 2,5" Lift and runs on 33's. The only thing which isnt my favorite is the Automatic trans.
It is a 2 seater so it gets truck registration which cuts the yearly tax from 1200euros to just 178euros, and is insured as a camper.

I bought it to go camping with a do offroad trips. Over the next couple of months/years I will be working on it.

Hope you enjoy
