Stumbled upon a 1992 80 Series with 150k on the clock for $1500. I don't have all the details yet, but the owner says it needs the transfer case replaced. He already has a replacement transfer case to go in it. Has an ARB on the front, but it looks like it was tweaked a little in a minor collision.

Going to talk to the fella further about it later. It is too far for me to hop in the car to go look at until the weekend.

Anything I should ask him about to help determine if it is worth the drive? I have been a 4runner/Tacoma driver for years now but have never gotten behind the wheel of one of these beasts.

Thanks.

It's a 92, so it's got the 3F-E. Slower motor, but extremely reliable. That's pretty low mileage-wise. I'd be weary that the xfer case is the only thing wrong with it for that price. Not like you can really test-drive it until it's in, so you're taking a risk.

That was my concern - no test drive = potential additional headaches.

Do you know any Cruiserheads or toyota wrenchs? I'd say drag one along to take a good look at it, reward them with beer. They'll know what to look for. Might want to ask in your local clubhouse.

Sounds like a :worms:

PM me the ad and seller's contact info so I can look it over and give the seller a piece of my mind for trying to take advantage of you.

On a completely separate and unrelated note - how far off of I-20 is it?

Haha. Y'all are sly. I'll tell y'all where it is after I take a look at it. I'll even get some photos for y'all too.

I'll see if I can round up a cruiser fan to take a long.

Haha. Yeah. Probably not worth your drive. It is in South Mississippi. Does not look to have any rust issues.

I'd show up with $1000 cash. $500 in one pocket, $300 in another, $200 in another. Offer $500. Come up to $800. Lastly $1000. If it looks good snatch it up. Worse case scenario is that the tranny and transfer case are toast. You already have the transfer case. If you pay someone to fix the tranny you are $1000ish in.

It may be something simple and the PO had no idea what he was doing.

$2000ish for a rust free 3FE powered 80 with 153k miles seems like a good deal.

Just be prepared to walk if he says no. The smell of cash has never let me down. He probably just wants to get rid of it and not put any more money in to it. And has a wife nagging him to get rid of it.

Unless it is burgundy. Then FAWK that. Let it rot. Burgundy sucks. :flipoff2:

I paid 1200 for a single owner dealer maintained 93 because the lady who owned it said there was an 'electrical problem' that they couldn't figure out.

I didn't want to buy a problem car so I almost didn't even look at it, but I did. That's when I noticed the battery was from 2006.

Dropped a new one in and it's been running like a top since.

Moral is that it's always worth the look.

Sweet deal!

Well, all is for nothing, thanks for the input fellas, but it sold last night. I couldnt have gotten there that quick... Damn.

Rule #1: Have cash and be ready to pull the trigger immediately.

There are more buyers than 80s for sale. Especially rust free 80s. Sometimes you gotta just take a flyer on an 80 and hope. If you buy a rust free 80 for $1000-1500 I don't know how you can go wrong. Even if you have to replace the drivetrain.

This was my thinking. If I could have I would have picked it up. I just couldnt get there last night unfortunately. Was only for sale for a couple of hours FYI.

That's standard for land cruisers when they are undervalued like that. Almost every one I've bought had people trying to buy it out from under me even if I was there an hour after it was posted.

Next time I'm just to leave work early and make it happen.
