acetone and transmission fluid.... I'm not a believer in that... I have some made up, but it's been relegated to fire-starting-liquid because PB blaster works better for me.

Got some pictures from the welder/fabricator tonight. He's been great giving me updates and working during his free time from work and family to help recondition my cruiser.
A previous owner had cut holes for a cb.
Got a little time myself to clean up some small parts.
Have some paint from cruiser corps to make the grill the nice Toyota Cygus white. Just needed to fix it up first, sanded down then rust spots cleaned with naval jelly to kill rust and sealed with primer and then primer and filler to get ready for paint. Same on the jump seat frame.
Hoping to clean up the roof parts the same way and saving what I can that rust hasn't eaten away. Pulled apart the many previous owners repairs on the roof as well.
A po glued some padding and a homemade headliner and what I think is wallpaper as well. As rusty as everything else has been the roof is in ok to good shape with a good rain gutter except for one or two spots. Going to be a pita to clean off glue and cushion material but something good to work with.

Check out Daubert NoX-Rust. This stuff has been around for a while, but it is the corrosion protection of choice for most utilities when they dismantle turbines, etc. for long term overhaul. It';s very similar to what was the Military's "cosmoline" --- stuff lasts forever

I ended up dealing with the rust by just getting what is there cut away and replaced. I will keep the underside coated in something like what you mentioned reminds me of what they use up north for the salty roads. Help keep the salt from eating away the frame. I've got a por15 test kit and some Eastwood rust encapsulator to put on it when the welders done if I am happy with the por15 I'll use that if not probably a mix of products to protect the metal from rust.

Got a replacement hood in better shape from mud classifieds, was told it had been sandblasted in a few spots and premiered over.
Cleaned up the little rust that was around the windshield hold down hardware holes and a little surface rust on a few parts. Sanded and cleaned with naval jelly to kill the rust and then primer sealed to keep it away then set into storage for a future day I can clean up even more.
Sticker on underside says 1980
Also tried spraying the cruiser corps Cygus white rattle can on the bezel. I'll need to learn how to sand and clear coat to improve it but happy to see some progress.
I also cleaned up the passenger seat a little bit. Used some naval jelly to kill the surface rust on the seat frame and then rattle canned black.
Does anyone recognize the seat covers?
From what I can tell it is a different cover on then the stock seats. No hard backs on these, I bought replacement back pieces to put on from another member.
Heard from the welder about a week ago the passenger side replacement outer rocker is in and he's cut out all the rust in the passenger floor and is patching it up.

He finished patching up the floor pans and the real steal rockers. He's currently working on the trans tunnel and then it's a few patches in the bed and some on the rear quarter panels.
that's weird, how the floor is rust-free and the cover rusted...
Wow, great work! Having a great welder is money in the bank. My trans tunnel was crap in the same area too, I ended up buying a clean one from a guy based out of Georgia. I also used the Cruiser Corps Cygnus white rattle can on a small piece and it came out flatter that I expected. A little wet sanding and I hit it with a clear coat and it came out perfect.

Keep plugging away, it can seem daunting at first but the more projects you can scratch off the list, the closer the light at the end of the tunnel is.

It was missing the floor in some places before haha. This picture was after the floor pan replacement. I'm looking at epoxy primers and have a sample kit of por15 to try and lots of Eastwood products to keep it from ending up full of rust again.

I've been looking for a trans tunnel and originally was hoping to find a good one and sell this one but I haven't seen many pop up forsale. So the original one started to look like a good option to repair.
I'm having to learn about all types of repair from paint work, engine work to axle rebuilds to brake stuff. I'm lucky that this forum and YouTube exist I don't think I would be able to do a lot of the stuff on my own or know about it without seeing examples first hand.
I am ready to get it back from the welder and start messing with it. I think when I finally do get it back I'll take a couple days off work just to work on it. I have axle rebuild kits and boxes of parts I've gathered the last few months to do everything I can to it.

My dad owns a shop that does stainless, commercial kitchen equipment... there are many times on my '40 where I think I should go back to my roots and replace the rusty with stainless. Fortunately, I've done that before and I know what happens... the floor rusts around the stainless (not really a d'oh, but the time it'd dropped out the truck was a day or two away from the scrapper)....

Got an update from the welder he did a lot of great work saving a trans cover I was thinking I would have to replace.
Rust had eaten away the sides and a previous owner had cut two slits in the cover behind the shifter and folded the metal down made me think it was beyond saving. I think it was so the cover could be removed without taking out the heater.
Next week he's on to the bed area and rear quarter panels and unless I add more to it I should have the 40 back and ready for me to take a week away from work to work on it soon... Maybe, I left it in June thinking this was a one month job but the welder kept doing great and telling me about other things he could fix so I figured get the rust problems in the tub fixed correctly and be done with it.

I got some free time to stop by the welder tonight and check on the progress. I also was able to place a order for oem replacement parts from beno. Radiator hoses, clamps, drain plugs, gaskets and a few fastners and bolts. All the exciting stuff haha
I have a birthday coming up so that might give me alittle more to play around with on fixing up the cruiser, it will probably be the last spent on it for a while except for oils and maintenance. Im thinking seat covers from cruiser corps at the moment but thats subject to change depending on what the cruiser tells me it needs.

I had a birthday this past week and it was one of the better ones I've had. My girlfriend got me a big toolset which fills in items I might not have or have lost over the years. I was surprised it contained ratcheting wrenches, perfect gift to help me with my cruiser. She also got me two posters from sackwear as I have been hunting Toyota or landcruiser memorabilia. I'm now looking for a way to frame them so I can keep them looking nice. I'll post a picture of them once I get it done.

I ordered myself a present from Beno, I was planning on ordering in a month or two but saw the brake pads recently became no longer available so I figured I would get my order in. Nothing exciting to most people, I'm like a kid on Christmas with it. All new oem radiator hoses, clamps, gaskets, rad cap, thermo cap, drain plugs and side cover and diff gaskets and some random little things. The water pump was done by the previous owner at a shop around 2010 so I figured I would check that once I get in there.
I got an update from the body welder. He's started on the rear quarter panels. An area that's common for rust on these. Once he got in he found bondo showing a previous owners crummy attempt to repair which was cut out. He's going to first try and shape a patch himself to repair it and if we don't like the look of it I will fork out for a patch from a vender. (Right now the best option I've found for this spot is Ccot, please post up if you know of a different place or have tried the patch)
It's on both sides which stinks but he's fixed a lot of other stuff on the cruiser and made it look like oem to me so I'm glad I've got a great welder fixing it.
Here is the patch panel that I might try if he can't get it looking good but he has in other places so hopefully I won't have to buy them. I also don't think they will cover the whole rusted out area but if I end up needing them I'll call and ask for exact dimensions.

Got an update from the welder, it looks great to me. I was bummed about seeing what a mess it was when he found the bondo but he did some great work to repair it. He's not finished yet but looks much better than a rusted out hole. He shaped a patch to fit and has alittle more to do but looks great!
My girlfriend got me two posters from sackwear, they are pretty cool. I have been looking for a frame to put on them but have had trouble finding the correct size frame so I put one in a cheap poster frame that doesn't fit. Will look cool in an office or garage whenever the house comes.

I get to pick it up Friday! what started as a month long outsourced welding project back in June for originally just a floor pan and rockers is now finished and the welder did more than I could have first imagined to help bring my 40 tub back.
He finished up the drivers rear corner repair in that place where the support is behind that always seems to rust on these. Then he finished up fixing rust pin holes in the bed area.
For the rest of the week I'll just think of a timeline in my head to get all of the work done I would like to.
The short list in no particular order is full fluid change on everything, all new rubber hoses and cooling system flush. Front knuckle rebuild with new oem brake parts, rear pinion seal replacement, rear drums service to fix a leaking cylinder. Replacement hood install. Try the por 15 sample kit, clean up and use the Eastwood rust encapsulator frame spray on what I can. Heater rebuild, cluster freshen up, freshen up dash knobs. Replace muffler and rusted out exhaust, Install 60 coolant overflow bottle, install new jumpseats and cruiser corps seat cover... Probably in spring when temps are higher.
