crawled underneath today... plugged/filled the tranny, checked the transfer case, and tried to comprehend how in the heck I thought water was getting in there.. I had convinced myself that 'had to be' the issue due to the color of the oil (?) discharge and presence of what I thought to be air bubbles in the oil... I have no idea what oil was in there before, but it dang sure wasn't what was supposed to be in there.. maybe some water intrusion from an interior wash down but even that would be difficult I would think... anyway ... grateful Scrapdaddy for the guidance on what should have been obvious to me...
Getting some brake components from Mark's Off Road in before XMas, once those are installed I should be able to drive her around the block anyway...small steps.

Look for that vent. It should on the upper driver's side ( I believe ). The vent should have a hose or a vent cap on it, if a hose, it should run up to a high point so road or river water can't get in the trans.

Next thing we know he'll be telling us about the box of ultra rare NOS FJ55 spec domathingy's he's bout to be listing on his website!!

MacDaddy, engine oil can't get into the transmission via a seal. What type of oil was in the transmission? Did you put it in there. I would refill and drive it. Put some miles on it and check it again. Sounds like everything is right, but just some bad oil in the transmission. No need to jump the gun just yet.

EDIT... Water might have gotten in it through the vent. Check if there's a vent hose coming off the top of the trans.
Yes, some fresh 90W in the tranny and put a few miles on it! Then check and see how it looks.

PnB guy washed out the floors w water and maybe some got in the tranny somehow???? But another fluid change will show where I’m at.
Thanks Scrap!
I am pretty sure the tranny vents through the shifter (on top), so def possible your guy got water in there by rinsing the floor.

I did come across a photo of the Downey 3 speed floor shifter that was in my parts wagon with a vent on top.
