Holy poop!
Yeah mine is not the ignition.. it's at the ignitor... I installed a new starter prior to paint and body work (15 mos)... IIt cranks right up.. I didn;'t mess with the coil/ignitor at all... my three sending units are toast... I've got a new fuel gauge sender coming from Yemen . I checked the coil and ignitor via the FSM and it all checks good... I'm thinking like you I've got a crossed/melted, short wire somewhere... The PnB guy left the ignition witch on multiple times while doing the work and I'm thinking something between the ignition switch and the ignitor got toasted... But it's cranking right up and running/revving...
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.....

I was thinking that as well, and I'm not 100% in my testing, but following the FSM test guidelines it checks out ok...
I've checked several times and the numbers are good... fuses are all good...

Rick, I just want to say how much I respect you and the guys like you who dive into a problem and figure it out. Old vehicle wiring or any problem is a pain to diagnose, trace down and fix. You're sitting down with the manual and learning it first hand. I know it's a headache right now, but imagine how good it will feel when you get it.

Keep at it Brother!

Question: Are alternators grounded to the block via the alternator brackets and bolts? Hopefully the answer is yes... because if the answer is yes, I may be the culprit behind my electrical issues... I had the alternator bracket and adjusting arm both powder coated... the powder coating may be prohibiting a good ground..?? and I installed both just prior to the test run...
I think the alternator and the dizzy ground to the block.
Check ground straps, fusible link.
Have you checked all the fuses and connections at the fuse block?

I decided to change all the fluids in motor/tranny/transfer case. The truck cranks and runs great. no smoke, sounds good: and I've moved away from the electronics for now to maintain some forward momentum.. However, another problem/question has jumped up...
The transfer case oil was/is nice and clean. The tranny was filmy/bubbly/orange-ish in color. So I checked the oil in the motor, again-and it's perfectly clear.. I checked the water in the radiator,- it's water and anti-freeze, no sign of cross contamination, blown head gasket, or cracked block...
I left the tranny dry and the drain plug out, cranked the engine, and let it run for a minute or two. got under the truck, and yep, out drains a discolored motor oil...., the oil in the motor is still clear/clean..
1. My thought is pull the tranny/transfer, replace the front seals...and the clutch assembly/throw out bearing while in there..
2. Could water be getting in there somehow?? and still leave the radiator water) and engine oil clean??

Hopefully I don't need a new block!!
THoughts?

MacDaddy, engine oil can't get into the transmission via a seal. What type of oil was in the transmission? Did you put it in there. I would refill and drive it. Put some miles on it and check it again. Sounds like everything is right, but just some bad oil in the transmission. No need to jump the gun just yet.

EDIT... Water might have gotten in it through the vent. Check if there's a vent hose coming off the top of the trans.

Whew. That is a relief. I’ll check to see if I had some water intrusion from somewhere. No idea about the previous oil on the tranny before I just changed it. It was really rough. I changed it w Mobil 1.
I left the drain out of it when I left today. I’ll crank it tomorrow and let it run to confirm no seepage from anywhere. I’ll plug it and fill it.

I can’t drive it yet due to really bad brakes. I’m replacing everything. Booster, master cylinder, calipers, drums, discs. I’ve got time.

PnB guy washed out the floors w water and maybe some got in the tranny somehow???? But another fluid change will show where I’m at.
Thanks Scrap!
