The axles under the 85 BJ70 are the same as those under the 55 and 40? I don't think they are the same as under the 60 series.

They are the same width, but same setup by year going into 60 series. I put an ‘85 70 series axle in the rear of my ‘79, it had the 60 series integrated ebrake in the drums and 3:73 gears. Direct swap with correct perch placement -
Nice!
I didn't know the perches were the same.

Haven't heard from you in a minute!

How are things going?

By "same", do you mean the same width? I do believe the 70 axles are same width as 40/55, but they are set up for coils, eh?

60 axles are wider.
My 1994 FZJ75 has springs all around. IIRC they went to front coils in 1999.

I swear I heard the 70 rear perches were just a fuzz off of the 40/55 width but I could DEFINITELY be wrong. Will shout out to @ceylonfj40nut on that, because again, my cloudy brain thinks that is where that info came from. CD definitely has used the 70 rears in the 40 series. He doesn't own a 55.......YET!!!!

It is funny, I want to put a FF rear in every Cruiser I have that doesn't already have one. That said, the semi float axle is a beast! Still, we want what we can't have.

70 series rear axle works in rear of Fj40. Need to move perches a smidge on both sides. @SipLife maybe able to weigh in. Here is a side profile with stock 40 rims and 10.5” wide tires.
