Do any of these have any significant towing capacity? Like a 40 on an aluminum trailer? (I doubt it but I figured I'd ask)

In my opinion, most of them can. It’s just what compromises you want to run with.

-1HZ will (pretty slow going)
-Wouldn’t trust an L series motor that hasn’t had extensive cooling system work done.
-1HD, FT or FTE will comfortably do it.
-13BT can do it.
-PZ can as well (pretty slow going)
-3B may be a tad low on power but would eventually get you there!

From what you are describing, the most obvious is a 77 series or a prado which is basically the same. Both are JDM only models so RHD is the only option.

Ummmm, sorry but not correct on the Prado part,

92 Prado brown20.webp

Cheers

Looks pretty similar to a 77 from the stand point that it is a 4 door SUV type body style which is what the comparison was made to.

I think he is saying that the Prado (LJ7x) wasn't a JDM only model, and is available in LHD.

Ian.... thanks for chiming in. As you know from our communications I'm a newbie in the 70 series world and I'm trying to learn more....

Yes I stand corrected on the LHD availability

Since you can't get VDJ cruisers in the states, my vote would be a HZJ78 troopy, if you want something you can sleep inside, and outfit like a camper etc. If you're more of a pitch a tent or rooftop tend kind of person then an HZJ76.

Have a look at Andrew St whatshishandle's troopy build on Youtube. Amazing build.

Simple, loads of room and easy to work on. If you wanted more power for highway work or towing then you could swap in a 1HDT to replace the 1HZ. It's a direct swap.

Prados are great but the engine availability lets them down - KZ's and LJs. My KZJ78 isnt that much of a tow wagon.

Well I guess that's why I need to be schooled - see, I'm learning something already! (thanks)

So... a troopy format - with 2 side doors would be ok for my plan but 4 side doors MIGHT be better. I do want to learn about what is available.

As a selfish plug, suggest you plan on attending the 70series meet and greet in Oak Ridge, TN in late September. We should have several varieties in attendance

4th Annual 70 Series Meet & Greet

If you want to use it mostly as a daily driver I would recommend a lhd KZJ78, this has the peppy 1KZ 3.0 TD engine and coil sprung all around plus 4 doors. Not very common but they are out there, guys like Chris Spaulding that buy in Spain should be able to get you a decent example.

If the majority of the time will be spend camping/wheeling/traveling I would go for a HZJ75 Troopy, the 1HZ /H55 combo will run forever and plenty of room to load gear and still sleep in it.

I wouldn't dare consider towing a 40 on an aluminum trailer with most of those

@cruiseroutfit
Out of curiosity what concerns you with that towing arrangement? I’m interested to hear your thoughts on this.

(Not trying to thread hijack nor am I being confrontational, purely curious)

Well for many years I have towed 40's with other 40's until I could upgrade to a BJ73 as a towing rig :-) . Thousands of (slow) miles later I still carry happy thoughts about the olden days.HZJ73 on 33's will pull a trailer with a 40 on it very good at 75 mph ……. as long as the road is flat and the wind is giving you a break, still today the 70 series with the 1HZ are preferred towing rigs in many parts of the world.

I am actually selling my Ram2500 and will start towing soon with a HZJ75 and a lightweight trailer behind it

Yeah.... "flat" is not where I'd be towing... Generally not Colorado mountains, but mountains never the less... and often curvy mountain roads. I tow my 60 with a Yukon XL with the 8.1l v8 and I'm happy 98% of the time. Eisenhower Pass on the way to/from Moab was a challenge even with that.
My fantasy is that my expo rig could also tow a wheeling rig - a 40 or maybe a mini truck (downsized from the FJ60 I have now of course)

Low power (towing 6k lbs with a 3B makes me nauseated), small brakes, short wheelbase.

Our freeways are 75-80mph here in Utah at 4500-7500' elevations with lots of grade. It's not kind to the rest of the country trying to get someplace nor would I want to spend an hour at a time with my flashers on in the truck lane. :D

I've towed a 40 on a trailer with my 40, my 60, my 80 and more often my 100 and even our race 200 behind my 200. I wouldn't consider any of them ideal and it was always a one-time, short run or "in a pinch" type deal. To go into it wanting to build it for overland (read: heavy as is) and use it as a tow vehicle would be pretty ass backwards imo.

If an 8.1L Yukon has you happy 98% of the time, a 3.4L 3B is going to have you happy about 9.8% of the time and that is downhill :D

3B, or a 2F or 3FE for that matter, are not on the table for me even just for a DD expo rig.

Are you giving up your tow trailer/apartment setup or was that another person's from roundup?

That camper is gone for quite a while now, seems like there are always spare beds available in the RV’s that are around and if not I can sleep in the troopy, plenty of space in there ;-)
