I know it has a few flaws, and again.. not amused with the previous owner, but it is a great find. This is one that i've been sitting on for a few years. Will most likely do a full proper rotisserie resto, but I want to make sure I have all the proper mechanicals lined up.

Your truck looks really nice. where did you buy it and where has it been? I bought mine in Southern Ohio but it was an Arizona truck. I have refurbished almost all of the mechanicals with as much original Toyota parts as I could find. Mine is an F with a three on the tree and mostly original paint. I did the interior as well. I struggled and kept all the 9mm brake stuff, but had to find/rebuild all 8 wheel cylinders. Stops on a dime now. Also did 80mph just once to see if it would. One upgrade that I really like is a pertronix on the distributor to get rid of points. I had @FJ40Jim rebuild my carb.

Thanks, It's a Florida FJ the whole time. Went from a barn (literal barn find) in Tallahassee to my place in St. Augustine on a trailer a few years ago. Mine is a 2/69 date with all #s matching and 3700 original miles. Also an F motor w 3 on column. Replaced all the time worn rubbers, and burned a tanker full of midnight oil cleaning, and checking to see what I need. Previous owner wanted to create a "mud hogger", and started a little under the hood light resto. I cut a deal and stopped him before this beautiful thing got sacrificed to the Swamp buggy gods.

These things were never meant for speed, so never had it above 45-50mph, and I definitely appreciate all the insight from everyone. You guys are all really helpful. I'm a vehicle inspector by trade, and classic car guy by nature. I knew what I had when I saw this. This is my first FJ, so it's a special rebuild, and a LOT different from your normal Ford or Chevy. Most likely will have 65swb45 send me a carb, and / or have FJ40jim jump in as necessary.

The only thing that should be chrome is the hood spear. The other chrome bits are reproduction.

The entire engine bay should not be painted, just the sheet metal. Total amateur job.l

If you post more detailed pics, we can give you more insight into your 3700 mile truck.

All insight is good insight.... Be glad to.. Hang on.

...and yes. I know it needs a headliner, and he also sprayed some of the body with the hardware attached, which doesn't thrill me. Complete hack job on the paint, which I can work around. The body panels themselves are in good shape. It needs weatherstripping around the windows, but the guts are all there. I'm looking for guidance here on options, not negative criticism.

Great 40 but oh what a crummy paint job!

No just kidding you, dude. I’m jealous!

I’d say get that carb lined out and drive it and enjoy it. Don’t pull it all apart for a resto. It will take a long time and subtract from all the time you could be driving it.

Edit; looking more at the pics, it is REALLY a nice rig. I've never had a chance to buy anything that nice, complete, and clean.

Thanks... Much Appreciated.
The kicker is.... I didn't "buy" it in the traditional sense.. Truth is, I traded an Isuzu NPR Turbo Diesel 18' Box w 225k for it.. title for title. He needed my NPR Box more than he needed that FJ, and I was selling the box after I sold off a franchise. He didn't have all the cash, so we worked a deal. I went out there and crawled this thing hard, then played Opossum. I'm crazy.. not stupid!!! #horsetrader

Drive it around. Use it. Have fun. It's a really cool truck. Don't turn it into a pile of parts in plastic totes. Okay okay okay I'll stop with the unsolicited advice.

(My '69 has a lot of problems. The electrical system is so messed up, if I drove it to town I'd get a fat citation. I'm so busy with work and extracurriculars that I haven't found time to sort it all out.)

Advice and good guidance is always appreciated. I've built a bunch of stuff, but this one is a special rig. As you can imagine, since everything under the hood is blue... tracing electricals has been a bit of a challenge. I sympathize with you on the wiring. My harness is still all OEM, and brittle in spots.

Just checking in.. Hope everyone had a good New Year. Since I'm the OP on this.. I can help move this along, as I want to get this up and running to enjoy some good driving weather. If you need a pic of the intake manifold and bolt config., I'll be happy to attach that in a few mins... Stand by...

Here is some info:
And call Mark @65swb45 (818) 953-9230

Problem solved.

Nobody’s criticizing the truck. It’s just that nobody believes it’s a 3500 mile survivor. We tend to become a little skeptical anytime somebody says a post 1964 40 series is numbers matching.

What is the item attached to the driver side rear quarter around the backup lamp ? There are some screws below that as well ? That is not stock.

My 12/68 also had the emissions control module previously mentioned for certification MY68 US trucks. Frame number 64770
Definite US market, definitely a 2 barrel carb and manifold, titled as a 1969

Do you have pictures of your engine with carburetor/air cleaner? Did you buy it new?

Fifty years a lot of things can be changed on a FJ40. Forty five years I've owned my 68 have changed the carburetor at least five times. When I bought it the original owner had installed a Carter one barrel.
Here's a couple early 2bbl carbs off the parts shelf.
Dates are 3Jan69 and 3Dec68.
The really weird thing is the PN stamped on both is 21100-60191, but I thought the parts book PN is 60190, indicating that these were already revised.

Stranger things happen (cue mysterious music).

Do we know how Toyota stamped parts? If all the parts used on 3/69 FJ40 were made in 3/69 the production line would be empty while they waited for parts to be made. If they stamped them as they used them every stamped part used should have a matching serial number and year/month stamp. Personally think Toyota knew ahead of time when changes were going to happen. Toyota making a run of carburetors before the change only makes sense. Toyota dropping all Land Cruiser made prior to 3/69 has only helped to ad to the confusion. Remember over fifteen years seeing a number of micro-fiche selling on eBay. They were multiple one during some model years. Wish now would have looked at buying as many pre 3/69 as I could.
