I do not blast items if they are new, I did wire wheel and dress out the original fasteners with a brass wire wheel and make sure they are oil free. The plating shop I used dipped the large items and barrel plated all of the small items. I find that if you have small items (nuts, lock washers, any thing with a hole, you can safety wire tire them together (loosely) it works great when barrel plating. As far as oxidation, I media blasted one headlight enclosure and the rest I just took off the Bib and handed them in for plating. I could not tell the difference after plating. A difference I did notice was a color change on the last batch I received, it was a little richer in color. So as a rule , I would make sure large like items are plated together to prevent noticeable variations.

On the subject of the headlight grommets, I haven't crossed that river yet. I did salvage the originals, but I thought I would try the vendors and if not available maybe a auto dismantler, amazon etc for a "like" item.

A question from a newb when it comes to plating. Did you blast ALL your hardware before you had it plated? The plater I talked with locally said oxidation was ok as long as the parts were oil clean.

Also, what are you planning to do for grommets in your headlight buckets where the wires pass thru?

TIA

Mark
Mark, Kevin FWIW on my 66, I went to True Value and bought several sizes of grommets (sorry don't remember part #) and found a size that fit the headlight bucket nicely. I didn't plate the buckets but blasted them in a cabinet and hit them with JTO cruiser silver. I was pleased but admittedly plating would be a better option. I'm starting a collection of hardware for my "next project" so I am interested to know the answer to Mark's question.

I just ordered something online. It should be in Monday. I'll let you know if it works.

Thanks for letting me know.

nice build for sure!! where are those engine pics?:) I am doing my engine now. as far as zinc plating, sandblasting def gives a more matt finish than new raw material. I glass bead everything to ensure they are uniform.

The motor is getting close to installation (I've heard that one before :deadhorse: ). It has definitely been a challenge to install power steering and the alternator in a early F motor.

I hear you there Kevin. Originally I thought I would just use an FJ60 mount, and fab off of the AC provisions, but it wouldn't clear the battery tray. Ended up building a stand off of the stock motor mount, attaching an F alternator bracket to that, and ghetto-fabbing from there. For as funky as it looks, I'm only on my second fan belt in 10 years, which I take as a good sign.

That is exactly what I did. I tried to use a FJ60 bracket, but there are no bosses to bolt up to. The hardest part was to locate a dual groove press on pulley.

Kevin,

I had another thought about your setup this evening. Did you try your fan shroud on for size yet? I am using the 2F shroud which is shallower, and my PS pump doesn't clear the shroud by much. The F shroud is significantly deeper, and may even require a notch on the bottom to clear the two-groove pulley.

I was going to address that once I dropped the engine in. Thanks a lot for the fix actions. I like going into a task with all the info I can get.

More zinc plating .....Yea!!!! I also dropped some items off to the chrome plating shop. HOLY GUACAMOLE !!!! Just a few small pieces on the Landcruiser made me think you could buy another fj40 for the cost !(haha).

Just curious what the cost was for chrome plating. I was quoted 1100 for these few items in the pic. crazy! I was thinking just nickel plating would produce a factory look.

in that case your clutch fork boot needs to be flipped 180 :hillbilly: judging by your other skills Im sure you can handle it when it comes up.[/QUOTE]

I am using the 68-74 WP and had to put the aluminum spacer in front of the wp puelley for the fan to clear the outer belt as well.

I caught your pictures on my cellphone, but somehow I can't open them now on my PC. From what I saw I think you should be right at $200-250 range, a guesstimate. I had dropped off 5 ashtrays @ 60 per unit and the rear handles are about the same. the other items should not add up to a great amount. The only real problem with chroming is the buffing required, and that bezel for the turnsignal you have would be tricky. On my recent trip I asked what it would be to plate a period license plate frame...$125.00. Again the problem is the buffing/prep work. When I lived out east I used a plater that allowed me to have him strip it then I would buff it out (if not excessively pitted, that where the copper and nickel do their best by filling in the pits and voids) then he would plate it. Definitely cuts cost. I will see about doing that with my license plate frame sometime. The place I used was Walker's Custom Chrome in Redding, CA. On the point of using nickel.... its just the stage before chroming so most of the prep work /$$$$ is done. Once its that far you just dip in chrome and you are done. I know I am simplifying the steps. Also nickel will not offer the corrosion resistance that chrome has. Depending on how thick the nickel plating is will determine its resistance.

Also nice call on the boot. I was finding homes for all the fasteners and just stuck it on there.

Keep picking away... Got the parking brake assembled. Time to wrap up until needed.
