60 Series SOA Caster Angle (8 Viewers)

Hi all. I have finally bit the bullet and are doing a SOA on my 60. I have finished the rear and have the perches and dif angle for the for the front.

I'm up to rotating the knuckles but I need to know what the caster angle should be for best preformance on road (do want the death wobbles and so on).

Can someone please help?

you won't get a straight answer as there are differences in opinion here (imagine that!). +3-5* is what most will recommend.

I have found that if you are running larger rubber it is better to go with more caster 5*+.

How does your 60 handle at hwy speeds with the 4deg caster? I was thinking of 6deg caster but have been told that will chew out the tyres.

Anyone else out there with a SOA that would like to add to this link? My son had a 60 with SOA and it handled better than mine with stock diffs. problem is he did not do the rotation and has since sold the car so we cannot go off that.

I did 5* and kinda wish i had gone a little more, im also running 38.5's right now if it matters.

I have only put on about 350 miles since I put the new front axle on. I had problems with tire wear on the old axle but then I found out it was bent so that probibly was the cause of the excessive wear. That axle did not have the C&T.

I now have ram assist to go along with the C&T axle. I had to upgrade the power steering pump because of slow steering at low RPM's. At highway speed I do feel some "speed sensative" steering so its hard to know at this point if it would be better with more caster or if it's from the ram?

I targeted 5/16 of rotation measured on the axle tube. How far have others rotated when doing the C&T?

So is this positive or negative caster? This is the one SOA thing I've never been sure on... and does shackle reversal make a difference at all?

I went 5 on mine...That being said, I was OFF 1 deg from one side and it pulled a bit to the PS side.

Do it bolted up in the rig!

I did read post 2, but also doing some research I read that people use negative caster without power steering so that it is easier to turn the wheel... so I didn't know if anyone had messed with that.
And I was thinking that maybe folks used (or should use) a different caster angle for shackle reversed or normal shackle setup. The mechanics of the two systems are slightly different, so I would imagine the optimal caster angle might be different. Since they obviously act differently.

I can think of no possible benefit or application where running negative caster would be of benefit or offer any advantages. Steering geometry is steering geometry. Caster, camber and toe would not vary if a vehicle were SUA, SOA, IFS, SR or whatever.

X2 and it would cause dangerously unstable handling at anything above a snail's pace. Think about a grocery cart when the front wheels get turned around backwards.

Well I just went ahead and gave it a 5.5* and will see how that goes. I had everything from 2.5* to 9* suggested. I won't be running larger than 37.5 my normal tyres are 33 and my play tyres are 35. The way I see it, if I'm off I can always add wedges or c&t again.
