I've searched but I haven't seen a 5mge swapped in. I have found one locally that has the bellhousing for the w56 transmission and it also has the complete wiring harness. Is this a decent swap? I know the 7mge is popular, but I can get this 5mge pretty cheap. FYI my 22re is fine, but of course I would like some more power...

The 5MGE is near identical to the 7MGE externally, so everything should bolt in the same. Check this site for more research -> Supracharged.com - The Official Toyota Supra Swap Site - Supra 7MGTE, 2JZGTE conversions and more <- not many people on the forums over there so don't expect any quick replies, but a few really good write-ups

Here are some engine numbers for comparison
20R, 2.2L, 90 HP@4800, 122 Ft-Lbs@2400
22R, 2.4L, 96 HP@4800, 129 Ft-Lbs@2800
22RE, 2.4L, 112 HP@4600, 142 Ft-Lbs@3400

22RTE, 2.4L, 135 HP@4800, 173 Ft-Lbs@2800, 6psi
20R/22R Hybrid, Estimated 135-155 HP depending on build
2RZFE, 2.4L, 142 HP@5000, 160 Ft-Lbs@4000
3RZFE, 2.7L, 150 HP@4800, 177 Ft-Lbs@4000
3VZ-E, 3.0L, 150 HP@4800, 180 Ft-Lbs@3400
5VZ-FE,3.4L, 190 HP@4800, 220 Ft-Lbs@3600
5M-GE, 2.7L, 143 HP@5200, 154 Ft-Lbs@4400
7M-GE, 3.0L, 199 HP@6000, 188 Ft-Lbs@3600

Corax, what's the supposed HP and Torque if you were to S/C the 5M-GE @ 3-6psi?

*ajfriz..do it, Corax's is soo droolworthy and powerful, makes me miss my '83 :crybaby: .

Not my truck. Here are pics I took at Cruise Moab in 2004 of a Supra engine in a Gen2 truck. It was a very tight fit, IIRC.

That's a very nice swap corax. If I were to do it, should I hold out for the 7mge instead of the 5?

I don't think I ever saw a S/C for the 5 or 7mge, though I have seen a ProCharger installed to a 2jzge (inline 6 that came after the 7mge) so I'm sure it would work - fab a bracket, run a belt and figure which route to go to add more fuel . . . BTW, I think I finally found the cure for my cooling problem while towing the 3,500lb trailer

If you can get the 5mge at a great price I would say do it, you're still adding 30-40 hp and most everything should cross over to the 7mge should you decide to upgrade later (though you might want to ask someone more versed in Supras on that last part). I know the mechanical parts will work fine, maybe need the wire harness and you would definately need the 7mge ECU to run that engine.

one other tip, if you have a u-pull-it type junkyard near you start taking a walk there every weekend with a list of the parts you need - 5mge motor mount brackets (part that mounts to engine), 7mge Cressida oil pan (no custom pan needed on IFS trucks, SAS might be able to use the "mid sump pan"), Vane Airflow Meter, ECU, harness, throttle cable & linkage (unless you make a bracket to adapt the original cable), etc. - I spent 6 months gathering parts and lucked out sourcing a JDM engine nearby for <$400, total cost because of all the pre-work was easily less than $1,000

My 2 cents (which are now worth much less)...

I have done a 7MGE swap and probably would not do it again if I was starting from scratch. My engine runs awesome and I have hammered it, ran it hot, off camber crawling, and have had no problems. I installed ARP head bolts (not studs) and a middle of the road HG before installing. I would not install any of those engines without HG replacements and bolt upgrade.

If you are looking for torque I do not recommend these engines. These engines are super smooth running high RPM horsepower engines.

For the power, the 3rz is hard to beat, especially since it fits very well in the mini truck engine bay.

If you need more power run the 5vz with an r150.

Either one of those setups, with wiring, and accessories, loaded in my truck are around $1300 at a local yard. Yes the 5mge is cheaper, but IMHO, not worth the swap (for reasons stated above).

I have thought about doing a 5MGE or 7MGE swap in my 4runner but they are hard to come by in my area and 3RZs are far more common, so I will probably go that route. My 85 Supra has the 5MGE though so if I ever had the heart I could rip it out of that thing, but its so much fun to drive....:D

Thank you. I was going to say, "Not the right torque curve" and find one of your old posts, but this'll do better...

THX.

This is a CAR motor guys. The #'s may be higher ON PAPER, but look at the RPMs they were generated at.

They build peak HP at the highest RPM, but they are also the easiest reving engines of the bunch - peak torque is generated at about the same rpm as any of the other engines (22r/re excluded which is anemic anyway) I've used my 7m to tow a 3500 lb trailer cross country from So Cal up to Oregon and then east over the rockies with no real problems. but ideal engine choice depends on intended use - this engine does have a higher HP number than torque, but it also pulls good at low rpm - I like a good mix of high speed dirt, but I can also crawl.

also keep in mind there is an inherent advatage to an inline 6 that the numbers can't show - firing order and the smooth power application that comes with it. Ever wonder why EVERY tractor trailer uses and inline 6? Firing order and spacing between combustion events.

I did a good deal of crawling with my 5M - of course I also had dual cases...

I found that it lugged down pretty good. It was a very nice engine to drive on the road - just like in the Supra. It was smooth as glass and had good power.

Even though it was a car engine, it did a great job in my truck. My biggest mistake was not taking the electic fans serious enough the first time around. I skimped on the fans and the switch which eventually led to the demise of my engine when dirt got in the relay and caused it to overheat.

As I mentioned before - it was a very easy swap. It is also a very inexpensive swap. I now have a 3.4 swapped into a 2nd gen 4runner. This swap is MUCH better - everything just fits like it should. The cost of the swap was nearly 2x as much though....

I wheeled with you a long time ago at Paragon CAZ. Your resources helped me with my 7M swap..thanks.

That 3.4 swap looks clean!

Wouldn´t it be easier for you to turbocharge that 22r? Is your truck efi? If it is, that´s the way I would go. With the right turbo (could be a used one) at 6psi you will exceed 180 lbs of torque and 150 hp and you don´t have to swap anything and the weight of the truck will be kept light. Just my 2

:hhmm:

You could do the 5M swap and slowly search for a 7M for a steal. Once a 5M is in a 7M swap would be a day project.

I have also found a 7mge for about $150 more than the 5m. It does have about 100k more miles than the 5 though (190k).

How would the w56 handle the 7m? Wouldn't I need to find a turbo tranny?
