45 mph Top Speed, what's wrong here?

Yes the bezel is right.
My dyslexia is getting so bad I am starting to misread shapes.
I think I still have the roll bar correct though.
Sorry to throw you in a panic.
I ain't kidding about the dyslexia and then old age is taking it's toll too.
You wouldn't believe how long it took me to type just this.

I'm working in getting a 64 running and it also the hi/low lever in the stuck position. Never thought about it until now. Good info. Thanks

@middlecalf I do have hubs and I've had it up on a lift to confirm that the drive shaft is spinning, that makes more sense to be spinning without the hubs engaged. I believe I need to track down the link to FSM in order to understand the rest of the moving parts and operation. If the Hi/Lo level is working then I need to work through the FD part of the equation.

Thank you to everyone for your help and the roll bar is coming in the form of Metal Tech as soon as I can squirrel away some cash. Buying your first house and remodeling it has a way of making any extra cash magically disappear...

My 2 cents. I had the exact same thing, thought Fuel, thought distributor and carb (weber).

They all work together (Suck Squeeze, Bang, Blow). I correctly jetted my carb but still had problems going over 45. I agree with @65swb45. Check your distributor. Once I replaced my distributor, shazam, normal.

First:
  1. Set points
  2. Gap spark plugs
  3. Check timing (vacuum hose off and plugged)
  4. what is your dwell (usually not an indicator but should be above 28. Below means worn distributor shaft.
  5. If it is running, condenser is good

Good hunting and use patience. No magic answers here, only lot's of knowledgeable people who have been through what you have.

Boaf

My FJ40 "Hard Ways" will go faster than 45; maybe 55, but I am nervous about it at that speed because it has no top and no roll cage. My steering has a bit of wander in it, too. If I tipped it over, it'd be lights out for sure. I'll run mine up to top end after I get the top back on it.

The last FJ40 I had "Virgil" wouldn't go very fast, either, but I think it needed a tuneup, like plugs & points at least.

Don't kill yourself trying to set speed records in a 50 year old truck!
