4:1 xfer case options for FJ60 with 5.3/4L60

Thanks, that's good to know. There are no 2:1, 4:1 xfer case options? The Orion is just 4:1 and there's no version of the atlas that will work?

There's lots of versions of the atlas, all center rear output.

IMHO:
A 60 is a crappy choice for a tow vehicle
I have never heard anyone, ever, complain that their gearing was to low on rocks.
Unless you are only planning on running hard core trails 4:1 is a crappy choice. You will be hating that gearing on most trails.
Calculating reduction is pretty straight forward;
differential ratio times transfer ratio times transmission ratio.
EX 4.11X4X4.55=18.2
A doubler changes that to 36.4, however it gives you many more options.
Assume a 4 speed with a two speed transfer case;
You have essentially 4X2 gear ratios, or 8 gear ratio selections.
Add a doubler and you have 4X2X2 or 16 gear ratio selections.
I run an Orion with a Marlin Toy box, 4:1 for the Orion and 2.48:1 for the toy box. MOST OF THE TIME I never use the Orion low range.

Thanks rusty. Yes, the FJ60 is a crappy tow vehicle.

So stick with the 3.7 rear end, 4l60 first gear, and stock xfer case 2:1?

My math with 4l60 first gear of 3.0 is 22.38

Because you hit top gear on the 2wd sections in between the hard parts. It's happened to me, but I don't "hate" it.

That's a nice setup. It baffles me that they don't sell those. I would think they'd sell quite a few. If I had one I'd play around with 10:1 a lot.

White, is that an auto or manual?

I loved having a doubler in the my 40. For tight technical sections it provides unmatched control (especially with an auto), and on waterfalls it just let's a person crawl forward (rather than gunning it up things).

What are my transfer case options to get a 4:1 (I'd rather do that than lower my differential ratios front and rear) transfer case. This is an 84 LandCruiser with 5.3 vortec, 4l60 and stock transfer case. Since I have the AA adapter the stock xfer case, can I put an Orion in?
With a 4l60 you can run a 203/splitcase doubler.

4.11 axle gears are common for cruisers and relatively easy to change if you get the whole 3rds. Used $$$ 500 any fj60 in a junk yard will have them. 24 beers labor

4.1 gear set for split case. about $$$ 2000, 12 beers labor.

Black box or doubler. $$$ 2000 + new drive shafts and tranny cross member modification to clear front drive shaft. a kegs worth of labor.

I have spring over with wheel spacers. NOT tippy for an educated driver. I have 4.11's 3b 5 speed. great on hwy. great wheeler. I've been thinking about 4.1 t-case gears for rocks. but...... rocks just end up breaking stuff.
203/splitcase is around $500 (I have a brand new one on my shelf for this price), not even close to $2k.

SM420 and an Orion should get you pretty close.

What about drive shafts. that doesn't add up to 2 grand?

I have nowhere near 2 grand into my 203 doubler. First Th400 with the 203 was free. I broke that one last year after 7 years. I bought another set for $50. The adapter was a few hundred. I would like to put an orion behind my 203 so I can have 1:1, 2:1, 4:1 and 8:1. that would run about 2000 all in.

having the choice between 2:1 and 4:1 is nice, especially when I had 4.10s. I don't have enough time on the 5.29s to have an opinion on them, but I suspect I will still appreciate having the choice. I've never really disliked having a choice or had the problem of low/low/low being too low.

I run an auto-203-splitcase and love having the gearing options. Especially running the auto I haven't needed it to be lower. For whatever reason my 203 isn't always the smoothest to shift back into high and sometimes it's just easier to turn off the engine, shift it, and start the engine again if it's binding on me. For those running the blackbox is that a smoother shifter? Always liked that option.

I know Chicago has had somewhat of an ongoing battle shifting his doubler. My Orion has issues with popping out of gear, it made two trips to AA and still does it on occasion. It's not that big a deal to make pulling it out again worthwhile.

On the subject of drive shafts, lots of guys run home brew front drive shafts made out of square tube. Its a place to save a few shekles and is very effective as long as you don't need to run highway speeds in 4WD.

My 203 is complicated to shift sometimes. Primarily if I am not paying as much attention as I should be.

The Auto seems to be the culprit. Hitting Neutral in the tranny still lets the output spin. It'll go out of low but won't engage high if it's not done right.

PITA, but not insurmountable..
