What are my transfer case options to get a 4:1 (I'd rather do that than lower my differential ratios front and rear) transfer case. This is an 84 LandCruiser with 5.3 vortec, 4l60 and stock transfer case. Since I have the AA adapter the stock xfer case, can I put an Orion in?

Mark's Offroad makes a 4:1 gear set for the splitcase you have. Georg (Orange45) can build you one..

Thanks - the Marks option might be the best route.

Does the Marks' Offroad option give you 2:1 and 4:1? Or just 4:1.

I'm hoping for the same effect as an Atlas.

For multiple low range ratios, you will have to go to a doubler or a tcase designed for multiple ratio's (like a 4 speed atlas).

A new gear set won't get you 4:1 and 2:1. Just 4:1 and 1:1

I have a 203 doubler in my 60. It's nice when I need it, but don't use it most of the time.

What's final ratio are you trying to get to?
I know it's debatable, but I think anything around 90:1 final is good enough for Rocks.

I need input on what kind of final ratio I need.
I've got 5.88's in my heap and when I have it in low, it seems about right for rocks - but I couldn't tell you what the final ratio is.
I assume my diffs are 3.73 (although I haven't confirmed) based on RPMs at highway speed, that would seem right.
I'm running 33's, but i'm going to 35's, and I am assuming that low range and 3.73 and 35's won't be quite low enough. This is not a daily driver, but it needs to stay a highway rig. Ideally capable of flat towing the heep or my FJ40 to the mountains - so I'd like to keep the 3.73 as it make cruising at 70-75 a breeze.
I am prepping to take the 60 SOA and am trying to contemplate everything I should do at that time - and it would seem the right time to make any change to the xfer case I need to make.

Why? Interested in your reasoning on that.

What does it matter if I am going to run 1 tons or not? I understood you can beef up the birfields to be pretty strong? I guess I should do the final drive math with the 4L60.

workingdog, go to the Novak adapters site and they've got a really good gearing calculator. I know there are a lot of these out there but I just find this one easy to use.

fyi, I went the doubler route (203 - splitcase) with 33's and 3.7 and run at about 1900 rpms at highway speeds.

I know a bunch of soa 60's on 35's that are happy with the off road performance. That being said, it won't tow a 40 for crap.

SOA FJ60s are tippy. No avoiding it, but full width axles (ie 1 tons here) are significantly wider than stock and can make things feel more secure. I went to 80 width axles on mine and even that feels a bit better than stock.

If you're staying with the 3.70 axles (they are not 3.73-that's a Dana ratio I think) the 4:1 t-case would be a sweet mod.

FJ60s are not the best tow rig though.

I don't see a problem with 4:1 with an auto tranny on front .. debatable you will needed .. but It would depends on your tires and trails .. but you also have 3:1 ( happy medium ...? ) from Marks ..

4.11 axle gears are common for cruisers and relatively easy to change if you get the whole 3rds. Used $$$ 500 any fj60 in a junk yard will have them. 24 beers labor

4.1 gear set for split case. about $$$ 2000, 12 beers labor.

Black box or doubler. $$$ 2000 + new drive shafts and tranny cross member modification to clear front drive shaft. a kegs worth of labor.

I have spring over with wheel spacers. NOT tippy for an educated driver. I have 4.11's 3b 5 speed. great on hwy. great wheeler. I've been thinking about 4.1 t-case gears for rocks. but...... rocks just end up breaking stuff.

What no one is mentioning here is where your powertrain is located in your frame, you might not have room for a doubler without cutting the floor. Not sure what you're willing to do that or not. Just depends on where your engine mounts are.
