Dear All,

I need an expert to look into the matter as it has created lots of confusion and I do not want to redo the head gasket job again, so please advise.

I have 2F Engine and recently Head Gasket gone bad. As a normal procedure we replaced with after market Gasket. After Gasket installation engine runs successfully, during test run I observed some bubbles in Radiator, therefore, as suspected we open the Head again and check the gasket for possible cause of failure. I was astonished to see that, the Gasket was burnt from some areas and water marks appears on some areas where no water hole present.

Then, I looked at my old gasket (See the attached pic, on top) the old gasket has some manually created holes and we didnt do these holes as per understanding that the Engine is 2F and gasket is for 2F Engine. Now, I bring another gasket (pic C, the last Gasket in the pic) that has all the required holes and seems satisfactory but it created another confusion the HEAD belong to "F" Engine and head swap b/w F/2F and 3F is possible.

So, please take a look at attached pic and provide your feedback.:bang:

One of the experts will chime in shortly - but I've always been told to only go OEM on head gaskets. OEM head gaskets can be pretty pricey (upwards of $150) but they are usually much better than aftermarket head gaskets.

That looks like a later-model (1981+) closed chamber head. Didn't they make different head gaskets for the '75-'80 than the '81+ 2F's? Are you sure you're using the right one? Also, Felpro makes a great head gasket at an incredibly reasonable price.

One thing have always done is spray paint the gasket before I put it on. I'll probably get a bunch of comments on this but we started doing this when I was a kid. I can't remember where we got the info. We would take a can of spray paint and give both sides of the head gasket a light coat, let it dry for awhile and put it on. I have never had a gasket fail but that means nothing. I have done more than I can count like this.

Don't do that. It works just fine without any non FSM proceedure.

Before I bothered putting that head back on I'd want to know why the heck the valves are open with the head off the motor. With the head off the motor ALL the valves should be closed. If they are not that usually that means the valves that are hanging open are bent and need replaced. Once that is sorted out I'd buy either a new OEM Toyota head gasket or a Felpro gasket for the reinstall.

What is the casting number on the top driver's side of the head? That might help identify what you are really dealing with.

Good luck!
Nick

I presumed the valve springs were off, Holy s**t are the valve springs still on and valves are stuck open?
I wish I knew which gasket to use. I have been following head gasket posts for awhile trying to resolve the differences in the holes. We need a Poser or Pighead.

I recently removed the head from my 12/78 2F. Here are just a few pics for reference. The head casting number is 61031 and my block has domed pistons.

1 - Block with head gasket still on it.

2 - Bottom of head with gasket in background

The gasket that was on my head looks like the one FJforty posted in post #2 above. Cylinders 1 - 4 have a small coolant hole and cylinders 5 & 6 have a larger coolant hole. I used a Fel-Pro gasket # 21219 B when I reinstalled the head. I think it was for 2/75-84 2F engines. There was a note on the part number paper which said "replaces no. 11115-61010"

Hi,

Please also take a look at Block and advise.

Flat top pistons + closed chamber heads = late model engine. Did you use the right gasket for your year engine or did you use an earlier 2F gasket?
