285s to 315s, wish you hadn't?

Both the 33 and the 35 on the LC80 WILL rub against the back of the front fenders, mudflap actually, if the front axle has been pushed back a bit. In my case it only rubbed at full lock.

I loosened the bars that prevent axle wrap and used a pry bar to move the axle back forward to the center of the wheel well.

Worked for me.

It's possible that my bushings there are a bit worn and might need change soon. They still look good enough, but show cracks of age.

If I had 33's and had found their trail performance limit than I'd upgrade to 315's and the appropriate lift. Otherwise I'd blow the coin on modifications that would provide a bigger bang for the buck.

I refuse to believe that a 285/75R16 mounted on a stock rim is rubbing with 2" of lift ANYWHERE in the wheel well.

I aquired my setup with a 4" lift and Yoko MT 315's near 4 years ago. I learned to drive it that way but never liked the ride so when I couldn't immediatly find replacement 315's for my worn tires I bought shorter springs to lower my ride thus making my new smaller tires look bigger. Got a softer ride and easier drive with less sway in the process too.

The part under discussion is, not sure I got the name right, the radius arm. Looks like a little I beam and there are two of them attached to the axle at one end and the frame the other. While trying to rid myself of a small low speed vibration and noise, I reinstalled some drop brackets at the frame end of the radius arm but failed to tighten the bolts sufficiently so I probably pushed the axle back a bit when I hit some speed humps and got the tires rubbing at full lock. I lost a lot of time playing with the adjustable panhard and failing to get rid of the rubbing, even when I put the 33's on. A friend clued me to the possibility of the radius arms drop hangers and axle because, until this happened, I too thought those things pretty well set. I was actually planning to replace the bushings, but they looked to be in good shape so, at a loss on what to do next, we idly tried a pry bar, got movement and continued the effort till the tires looked centered in the wheel well. I had the wheels aligned after and the computer gave me a passing grade.

The car drives well now and I don't want to go back under any time soon. I think the rubbing with 33's should never have happened but it did and I think I probably have worn or soft bushings that need replacement, but I'm going to deal with that another time if a problem presents itself in that area. For now I'll try to enjoy the quieter ride and the new tires.

This sounds like a non-stock set up to me. As far as I know, there are no reinstallable "drop brackets" on the frame end of the front axle trailing arms on a stock FJ80 or FZJ80.

If yours has been modified then we're back to the sample size=1 and you can't claim that 33's rub with a 2" lift when you've got a modified rig with some heretofore unidentified drop brackets.

You're reasonably correct that my set up isn't factory stock. I have leftovers from the old 4" lift kit like adjustable panhards and beefier radius or trailing arms. ( Not sure what the names of those things are. ) I also put back the hangers that I had previously removed when I lowered the car.

However, I think the lesson is that given parts that are sufficiently worn or loose, the axle CAN be moved back enough to cause even 33's to rub at full lock. The ride isn't stock, but it's close enough. Even without the drop brackets those things can still be moved by a pry bar and therefore also by a speed hump or pot hole.

I doubt this can happen to fresher LC80's, but it can happen to those of us who drive old and very experienced rigs.

You're right, with enough alteration and damage to the suspension 33s will rub, but this isn't what's being discussed here.

I guess these sweeping generalizations that I've seen posted as "tech" are starting to get on my nerves.

35's are just for show.
When respected members (like Rick, Doug, T Y L E R, and many others) are running 35's and some newbie comes in and says 35's are just for show, that rubs me the wrong way.

33's *will* rub. Again, coming from a newbie with a modified truck.

All LX450's require premium and will turn on the MIL if you run regular. The Owner's Manual says to run premium. Another newbie posting yesterday.

This is 80's tech. If you have a fact and can back it up then fine. If you have an opinion then state it as an opinion. If you have a sample size=1 then don't generalize.

IMHO, it sometimes seems as if there have been more "bum steers" than actual, factual tech around here lately.

In a stock 80 series set up, the only things that can wear to the point where 285's will rub the rear fenders are the three rubber control arm bushings. If they are worn to that point, stop driving the vehicle immediately because it is a danger to everyone else on the road, not to mention you. I suspect something else was changed (or is still changed) though. Post up pictures of what your set up is, and many will chime in and let you know.

285's are for practicality and 315's are just for looks? For someone who just a month or so ago started upwards of 15 threads asking some pretty newb questions (nothing wrong with being a newb, but the fact remains) that's a pretty brash statement that would require knowledge of and most likely previous experience with both tire sizes.

Bottom line: Yes, this is the WWW where everyone has an opinion, but the value of this tech board is completely based on the accuracy of the tech that goes in it. In other words, if you don't know, don't post.

Yes shocker this is very true. And i am a newb to this forum and cruisers but that doesn't mean i don't have knowledge on things that having to do with in this case tires. I have learned a lot from people in my club and friends and on this forum so i feel like my advice is that of a lot of the people on here. It is true that 285's are more practical and you know that. 315's are great too if the proper stuff is there to go along with them. Don't let that little thing that says rookie on the side of the thread make you think that, that person knows nothing about a topic. Its just wrong.

Yes shocker this is very true. And i am a newb to this forum and cruisers but that doesn't mean i don't have knowledge on things that having to do with in this case tires. I have learned a lot from people in my club and friends and on this forum so i feel like my advice is that of a lot of the people on here.
