285s to 315s, wish you hadn't? (1 Viewer)

My view is that there is no better truck than an 80 on 33's with the std. OME lift. That said, I run 36s on my setup. Do I regret it? No. But I have spotted guys on 33s through what guys are doing with 35s etc. True the line may not be quite the same, but I'd bet that 90% of the trails a guy with 35-36s does a guy with 33s could also do.

Once you go above 33s a lot should be addressed. It gets more expensive and you are doing things like adding more spinning mass which increases breakage etc.

Am I running to turn my truck back to 33s? No, but if I were to do it all over again I'd stick with 285s and be much happier.

I must admit it makes me a bit sad to hear junk say that.

Well I've had 315s on longer than most everyone, about 4.5 years now. I put the standard 2.5" lift on and slapped them on. Originally I had the medium springs which did give a slight rub but then when to the heavy springs and no rubbing since. With the stock gearing I towed a camping tent trailer through the white mountains for 2 seasons. I then went with 4.88s and the truck drives wonderful.

Alot has to do with what you want to do with the truck and your personal expectations.

You'll always find some guy who thinks he's a cut above the rest because he "demands" better performance and will tell you the truck will be undriveable or the consumate off roader who will need a 6" lift and all kinds of other crap because he's just that much more demanding of his vehicle.

Botton line I got BFG AT/Kos in a 315 for 128.00 a piece so I figured I'd slap them on and deal with it. At the time everyone was quoting Slee's site and some article that said that it wouldn't work. Well for me it did, it has to do with how I drive and where I drive and when the need arrises that I have to change something I will but the last 4.5 years have been real enjoyable for me and my "too big tires".

315s might be a mistake for you but life life gets real boring when you never take a chance at making a mistake.

I've got 315's on a 2 1\2 " med lift and I would never go back. May get the gears done sometime, but don't feel it to be a necessity.

My friend had been running 35's Pro Comp XTerrains and cleared them easily and that was with slee's medium OME lift. Also this was on stock gearing, the truck was slow, but then again the 3FE was never meant to be fast :D. 315's are close to a 35inch tire right? Is the 315 larger or a tad bit smaller then a 35?

I'm going to stick with 33x12.50s when I get my lift. I'll have the tires before I have the lift so thats part of my reasoning for staying with 33's.

You will switch to 315's ... ;)

315 is almost a 35 correct? Or is it the same size or bigger? Math was never my strong point :(

315x75R16

((315mm x 75%)x2 + (16"x25mm/"))/25 = 34.9"

I've wondered that myself , though I am a little heavy off the line sometimes . I took the precaution of installing a Truspeed recalibrator , and keep the PWR button on always . Hopefully that diminishes the load on the tranny past 1st gear ...

I just used up my 315's. No more were available in my area so I replaced them with 33's. Both sets were inflated to 30 lbs. I also dropped my springs from +4" to +2" above stock. I drive an old LC80 with stock gears.

With the 315's and + 4" springs the ride wasn't all that bad but you felt every speed hump in the road. There was no such thing as a mild one. Dropping down to the + 2" springs and staying with the 315's the ride was much improved for comfort. However you couldn't afford to do even minimal flying as the tires would hit the fenders. No other problems were noticed, and I really don't often fly the car so no big deal either.

I'm now using the 33's and the ride is much the same though climbing small obstacles seems easier. There is a minimal improvement in acceleration, though you have to know the car to feel the difference. It also drives a lot quieter, but that is probably the difference between old tires and new ones with fresh tread.

I still like my ride.

If anyone went to 315s and regret it...let me know. I will take em :)

Most tires that are 315/75R16s, or what we call a thirty five(34.9 converted from metric to inches, ty tyler) are not really that height. Mounted they range from a 34-34.5. Examples are mtr, bfg at, bfg mt, and tires like that. My mtrs only measure out to be 34 mounted. When you talk about a thirty five swamper, that is going to run much close to the advertised height, if not the same, or even bigger. Just something to think about.

Has anyone that went woth a 285 or a 315 experienced any rubbing on the frame or wheelwell when turning? My 99 4runner has 285's on stock rims and if I crank it all the way I can make it slightly touch the frame. I don't want this to happen on the 80.

Neither size will rub while turning (on your 80).

My question is how much harder on the transmission is it not to re-gear ??

Probably not much, but definately harder. You are putting additional stress on the crank every time you start off (higher revs to get into the same powerband). However, since our 80 cranks are built like tanks, it's probably not too much of an issue.

Mercedes used to put a 2nd gear start by default in all their automatics (don't ask me why). Only way to get a 1st gear start was to drop it all the way down manually into 1st at the light, then switch back up to Drive. Or floor it and activate the kick-down switch. They have since changed this design feature...

Both the 33 and the 35 on the LC80 WILL rub against the back of the front fenders, mudflap actually, if the front axle has been pushed back a bit. In my case it only rubbed at full lock.

I loosened the bars that prevent axle wrap and used a pry bar to move the axle back forward to the center of the wheel well.

Worked for me.

It's possible that my bushings there are a bit worn and might need change soon. They still look good enough, but show cracks of age.

There has to be something funny going on here. What's the WHOLE story of your setup.

I refuse to believe that a 285/75R16 mounted on a stock rim is rubbing with 2" of lift ANYWHERE in the wheel well.

?? if the front axle has been pushed back a bit. ??

Why would the front axle be shifted backwards ?

Shorten your control arms perhaps

If your front axle has moved back, you've got bigger problems than rubbing rubber.
