Relays seem to be a very reliable part, rarely requiring replacement. However, it seems a good idea to have a spare of at least a couple of the more important and less expensive relays on hand, such as the Main Relay (#90987-02004), which also appears to be used for a few other applications in the 80 series.
Some relays appear to have gone / are going NLA, such as the 3 listed below:
88630-60040 – Cooler Fan Relay (NLA)
88630-60050 – AC Control Relay (NLA)
85960-60010 – Headlamp Control Relay (NLA from Toyota and PartSouq, but is listed as still available on Amayama for $88.
Rockauto has quite a few after-market relays, though they didn’t appear to have replacements for the 3 listed above. Denso’s website lists several parts for the 80 Series, but no relays that I could find. (I assume Denso is the supplier for most, if not all, of the relays for the 80 Series).
For those planning on keeping their Land Cruisers going for the long term, I wonder whether it is worth acquiring spares of some of the relays that are still available. If they become NLA, can we count on there being an aftermarket replacement if one is needed? Some are not cheap, though PartSouq and others offer them for cheaper than US dealerships. Some expensive examples:
89531-60010 - Transmission Control Relay (available for between $275 & $400 from Toyota dealerships)
28380-66010 - Fuel Pump Relay (available for between $130 & $200 from Toyota dealerships)
85980-60110 – Door Control Relay (Available for between $450 & $690 from Toyota Dealerships)
There are many relays in our Land Cruisers. Doing a quick search in PartSouq and other places, I found at least 23 separate relays listed, though there are probably more.
What relay spares have you purchased or would you consider purchasing?
Any recommendations for aftermarket relay sources other than RockAuto? And, is anyone aware of Denso selling any of these relays directly, either in the US or overseas, like they do some other parts?
Maybe I overthinking this because relays are so reliable that we can count on them working for at least another 10 to 20 years? Would love to hear your thoughts and recommendations.
