With the front hubs unlocked and tcase in 2wd, the front diff and birfields are not spinning and will not get worn out.
So how often do the rear differentials and axles get worn out? ;)

Yes I'm familiar with that argument (and the one about gas mileage). I thought the same way until I moved to the middle east and didn't see a single locking hub. I thought there might be something particular about this build.

You see the rear axles don't have constant velocity joints or birfields so not very often. Look at any high mileage 80 series, they either need replaced or have been replaced.

My apologies to the OP. My intention wasn't to go down a rabbit hole on the advantages or disadvantages of manual locking hubs. I should have asked my question differently.

You wouldn't normally see a GCC pickup with manual locking hubs so I was wondering if there was something about the bits and pieces that you are assembling that made you go that direction or was it just a preference? That's the question that I should have asked.

Nice build by the way. I was in Saudi from 2018 to 2022 running a chemical company and associated mine. I got to see a lot of 75 and 79 series pickups and often fantasized about how to get a relatively new one home. I got lucky with my '94 FZJ75 as most are in relatively poor condition. Would be fantastic to have a 2018 though! Looking forward to following along as you finish the project.
 
Yes, just my preference. I like the idea of all the front axle components not turning all the time.
 
Screw all of this “stuff rotating/wear and tear/etc.” Everyone on MUD could care less about wear on components.

Manual hubs make a Land Cruiser. Period. It’s the iconic Land Cruiser front axle image in one’s mind.
Yea. That’s why I went with manual hubs on my 79. Absolutely hate them. I always complain when I have to get out in the mud and lock them in. And I always forget to unlock the hubs when I get in the clear.

Eaton is the plan, already have the OEM locker in the rear. Once I get some shakedown miles on her I’ll pull the front diff and drop in a Eaton.
