Builds 2010 76 series wagon: The story so far

The local Goodyear dealer quoted me SR2700 (US$720) each for a set of Goodyear Duratracs in 315/70/17 he had in stock. That's about a $300 tire in the US. Insane

I'm thinking of trying the Maxis Bighorn or Buckshot since I've been told they are available here. I think I could get away with the 285/75/16's without a lift (although my 7 inch rims might be pushing it). That would buy me some time until I figure out my total build.

Looking good mate! I like the 315's on her!

I may have missed it, but did you put the 315's on the 76 with 2" lift? or did you put your 4" lift back on?

Im looking at getting the 79 series TDV8 ute, with 315's, and hopefully only a 2" lift...?

Cheers guv....just left the 2" OME lift on her. Or is it a 2.5" lift?

Either way it works well, with no rubbing issues at full turn.

On another note, my bro is running a 4" lift on his 79 pickup, with 315's and its massive! Lots of clearance but especially hard to get in the truck if your a short fella.

Nice truck Boozews.

I like the plywood fold down tray. Is it custom or ready made?

A little help if possible please

Hi boozewz, I've just a read through of your 'story so far', and it looks like you know what you're doing.

I have an LC76 (2009) with a serious front axel shaking / oscillation problem under breaking. The whole front axel feels like it's about to pull itself off the car. I filmed it this morning:

Would you be able to take a look and let me know what you think the problem is? Toyota are a bit lost.

I haven't raised the car or done anything to it - so it only has factory stuff on it. It has bigger tyres than the ones it came with, but only 285's.

It's now so bad it feels dangerous.

Thanks,

Andrew

Did Toyota check to make sure that your brake rotors are not warped? It looks like it could be a bad case of that. You can partially test this by stopping using only the emergency brake, if it still shakes then maybe my next thought:

The other possibility is that one of the front tires has something in it (like sand or water). That would cause the tire to become unbalanced when braking, but it would also probably cause shaking when accelerating unless you accelerate quite gently.

hi , i had exact same problem.
here is how you fix it.
on both ends you will find a drag link, both need adjusting/servicing by removing splitpin and adjust srew.

The buckshot is not a tire I would trust they have blown driving over curbs the sidewall is not strong enough. The bighorn however is a different story and a much better tire which is what I use on all my jungle trucks now. all 35" 15"s or 16" rims. It also seems to flex/bag very well and probably will be ok in sand. I get mine down to 20psi in the jungle with truck tubes (gotta drill the valve hole bigger) in them and quite happy with the result.

Thanks all (Saillaw, Boozewz, Gohoel) for the suggestions.

I'll get Toyota to check the brake rotors to see if they're warped and also the drag link stuff also.

The tyres, Boozewz, are Kumho Road Ventura AT's (T285 / 75 R16) and I've had them balanced recently as well. They're probably 2 years old now but I don't do huge mileage and they seem in good condition. I was recommended them as I spend most of my time on the road rather than off it, and they're not so noisy as other brands. But please let me know what you might recommend. As I'm in Dubai, any off road stuff is in the sand.

Lastly, would you think that raising the car 2" and adding the extra suspension parts would perhaps help make the front axle 'stronger' - might that help?

On another note, any idea where I can get black wheel arch 'over fenders' from?? The guy I know here in Dubai only supplies them in white!

Thanks everyone again for your help,

Blashers

Blashers,

Try the test I suggested about stopping with only the emergency brake (make sure you are in a safe place). It's an easy test you can do on your own to eliminate some possible issues.

As far as the fender flares, I could be wrong, but I thought they only come in white and that people paint them.

Cheers

Dear boozewz.. where can i find the black steel wheels for my 76 series 2013 in GCC? can i order them from AU?

thanks.. but i am in kuwait and i did not find any here or in Dubai!!

i found ROH 16x7 trek 2.. are 285/75r16 fits on them?
It depends on the tire... Most 285/75/16 say they require a min of 8" width rim. You would have to look up the particular tire to know for sure.

But, that being said, I used to run 285/75/16 on the stock 7" rim and had no problem with them. You probably want to keep the air pressure a little lower than you normally would to keep the center from wearing too quickly. But even on long desert trips at 12 psi I never had one roll off the rim.
