What is really slick are the 2 door gen2 4Runners. Yes, they really made them.

The curved dash over the instrument panel is the giveaway. Yeah, the 2-door 2nd-gens were a rarity.

I would own one in a heartbeat.

I know this is a very old thread, but it can be done. I’m almost done with my 89 project. I used the abs roof bows from the old Ratical pickup kits which are still available (they don’t leak if you do it right). I cut the b pillars and capped them in 1/8” plate and welded alignment dowels on the roof section with mating holes on the bed rail section. I left the weatherstripping seam on the roof section to maintain a proper seal. The b pillars are tied to a roll cage for stability and the shoulder belt is attached to the cage as well. I’m recently legally blind so give me a break on my welds and workmanship, it’s pretty freaking difficult with limited vision and tremors, I used to be pretty decent at this stuff. I don’t have the hold down latches on yet so the rain drip edge on the cab is about 3/16” higher than the one on the shell. When the gasket gets compressed by the latch everything lines up perfect. I don’t know how I’m going to do final paint prep as I just don’t see well at all anymore, but I’m going to try.
