If not too late, suggest that you get out the propane torch and a cup of water. Dangle one crush washer at a time in the flame until it turns color, then drop it into the water. Scotchbrite the scale off of them and re-use. Heating them like that anneals them dead soft. If they were steel then dropping them in the water is significant. Copper and Aluminum don't react the same way as steel does. Dropping them in the water just cools them down faster, it isn't a required step.
