im doing a true budget turbo setup, should come in under $1k if i can tune it.
parts so far are
fresh holset h1c 8 blade with 1.05 rear twin scroll.turbosmart external, 7mgte 440cc injectors
emanage blue, injector and timing harness, map sensor and software.
gtr front mount.

i should have enough oil lines and pipe in the shed to sort it out.
currently at $750 and just need to get some exhuast tube and some weld els for the y pipe.

is a 95 maf truck with no cats or o2 sensors to deal with and already has a 2.5 inch strait though

I still enjoy the mildly built 4.6L 1FZ-FE in my 93. The torque is great... easily over 300 ft/lbs.

Curious, did you upgrade the cams or can it be done? Any benefit to upgrading the cams after boring block?

The 4.2 Atlas is a good one for a 275hp/275 lb-ft swap while losing 300 pounds. Couple that with a smart 4L60E tranny, a decent combo I think. I've driven an 80 with this combo and it's impressive I must say. Definitely not a neck snapping accel but passing people is very easy and painless.

Not to mention the latest ones supposedly make 290...

Unfortunately, that 290 hp comes on at a ridiculous RPM that we'll never achieve!!

But, you do get 250 ft-lb starting at 1200 rpm, with a peak torque of 275 ft-lb at 3600 rpm and stays flat until 5000rpm and this is quite noticeable.

Our engine runs out of breath early on in the rpm band. Bottom pic is the dyno chart of our engine.

I have stock cams. There could/will be some gains with cams... but they won't be cheap. Besides, my engine pulls great from idle all the way to redline. The engine has enough displacement along with a cylinder head design that will allow it to produce excellent power. Maybe it is time to revisit this.....

Yeah the new 4.2 atlas doesn't see peak torque until almost 5000rpms and it is just then the same as a stock 1FZ-FE at 3000rpms.
Good point!

I'd still swap in a heartbeat. IF mine ever dies.

IMO, the 1FZ is being underestimated.

Given the resource you have, the 1FZ would be a good contender. Not sure for the rest of us :crybaby: It's a robust fork truck engine, no doubt. I bet mine will never die and I tend to flog the s*** out of it.

Well "cheap" might be relative. The fact that you don't have to use 93 octane as you would for forced induction makes a difference. Stage 1 cams are not that expensive last time I checked. But with stage 4 cams, custom (larger?) valves and pistons (for the 4.6) it would still be lot less than the stroker kit, I think.

I have a Super Charged 80 though I like the power i have a new philosophy.
As far as I can tell the 80 was the last "simple" vehicle sold in the U.S..
It was in my opinion the pinnacle of what a Land Cruiser should be (at least for the domestic market).
Rebuild the head and be done with it.
Be happy that you can carry almost everything you need to work on it in a small tool bag and almost always be able to limp it home.

Prior to going with my v8 swap I was on the fence about putting a sc on my 1fz. When I came across a used one I asked the guy, why are you selling it. His answer was I'm sick of destroying head gaskets and running hot. Needless to say I scratched that idea...

thread derail - Istanbul, Turkey?

Yes, I have been living here since April.

Back on topic and my last contribution to this thread: I love the 1FZ.... Always have, always will. Most reliable engine I have ever dealt with.

Never had issues passing anyone, accelerating to merge onto a highway, etc. I don't tow with it and will never tow with it.

That said, I don't drive fast in 3 ton brick, I don't tailgate, I plan my braking and acceleration, and I use it for what it was meant to do:

Be the most reliable mass produced off road vehicle ever.

:)

It's my humble opinion the SC needs an intercooler, I know guys make them work but that air gets hot.

Agreed.. Needs a charge air cooler or ever air/h20.. I would also do head studs also .

I had to do several different things to get my SC to run cooler which work fine but an intercooler would be the prime item. I love the extra power.

TRD not too long ago started making their SC's with beautiful intercooled units for later model Toyota trucks with electric intercooler pumps feeding through handmade aluminum intercoolers. We missed it by 10 years ~ :frown:
