Guppie...I am not sure on your last question. I don't have my stock deck in front of me.

I tell you what though...when I pull my old Alpine I'll send it to you. It is just 2 years old (I think it is a CDA 9856) and has both satellite and iPod controls...it is pretty sweet. I hadn't planned on purchasing a new one...but, that point of sale with Crutchfield got me. Anyway...PM me your address and when I pull it out I'll send it your way.

Cheers.

Guppie I agree with you. I loved my stock head unit and was planning on keeping it forever, until the CD player gave up the ghost. I just put in a new Scion 1808 with the cabled iPod interface and I have to say it is one of the best and easiest mods for an 80 series sound system. Sure, an Alpine setup is much nicer, but where I live it is also a big target for the local scumbags. I already had my 60 broken into for the Alpine. With my new Scion unit in the truck it looks like the old factory head unit, the iPod is now hidden and not obvious like a RF or tape adapter laying around, and the sound quality technology is 10 years improved.

the ipod interface is a cable connected to the back of the head unit. this cable connects to a dash mounted port which you mount your ipod to. you can tell if a scion unit has the ipod interface if theres the 5th plug in at the back, usually along the bottom of the unit, not clustered with the other 4. if there isnt, theres just the standard toy/scion/lex 4 plug connectors, and the 5th is a blank.

i just picked up a scion head unit of ebay..but its not the ipod hookup one. no matter, as the wifey usually has the pod anyway, and i can get endless amounts of mp3's on a couple CD's. now to just find some speakers that should fit in the dash, and fr/rr doors. thinking i might go with the pioneers...

What am I missing here? I believe that the front door speakers are 5.25 inch speakers, and rears are 4 inch... Does a 6.5 inch really fit as a "drop in replacement"?

You are correct - the factory speakers are 5.25" in the front and 4" in the rear. I have no idea how anyone is mounting them to the original holes in the door sheet metal. I suppose the 6.5" will fit in the round opening in the sheet metal and you could just drill new holes and get new inserts. and leave the factory grills in place over them (seems like that worked for kurst based on his front door pics).

If a deeper speaker is involved also (bigger magnet or whatever) you could buy or make a spacer that mounts to the door sheet metal and then mount the speaker to the spacer (clear as mud?). The door panel with factory grill would still go back in place provided you don't go too big (there is about 1/2" or so of space between the door sheet metal and the panel).

I had my front Pioneers under the grilles as mentioned over and over here on MUD. I didn't probably do it just right because I had a bulge in the panel. The aftermarket grilles look just fine to me so I mounted the speakers on the outside of the door panel(See my pics above).

I don't know if mounting them on the outside just gives the extra clearance needed to clear the window channel and the hole through the door sheet metal, but they fit perfectly fine. I have to look, but I think I used (4) extra oversize nuts I had laying around that I used behind the door panel just to give it a solid backing. i.e. I used self tapping sheet metal screws, through the Pioneer mounting holes(and subsequently through the center of the nuts), directly into the door sheet metal. This allowed the speaker to snug up tight against the steel of the door without stressing the weaker door panel.

Sorry, that was a long explanation of a very simple install. If you don't like my little plywood spacer rings on the back doors, it might be better to go with a smaller speaker, but overthinking this is what made me wait 6 months to dig into it and get them put in. The whole process, including new head unit, took all of 2 hours for (4) speakers. And I'm no electrical guru by ANY means.

The sound is actually better(and without having to be cranked up) than my Accord with amps, subs and all that crap. Just a nice thump you can feel in your knees(in the front seat at least. I never sit in the back, but should be identical).

I don't know what it would have sounded like just swapping speakers and keeping the Toyota head unit, but I'm sure that would still be a huge improvement. Just look at the crap speakers that are in there now. Screams 1976 Ford Pinto. :)

FWIW, I replaced my stock head unit so I could mount my CB above it:

Still havent' got around to replacing the speakers, but I will probably go with 6.5" in all 4 doors due to my lack of factory sub.

FWIW,

I just visited our local Circut City liquidation sale. Weak to say the least. But, they did have the Pioneer tsg1642r and tsg1042r for $29.99 per pair. I already have the 6.5's in the front but will probably go back for the 4" speakers.

I also bought the Toyota harness for $11.

Should I consider replacing the factory amp with an after market one? I am only going to be running the 6.5's up front and 4's in the back.

I don't think you'll need the amp, but more is always better.

I'd put the 6.5"s in the back though. I've never heard the 4", but again, bigger, bigger, bigger........:)

I'm in the middle of this install myself and can offer few insights:

The Pioneer 6.5" speakers will NOT FIT under the OEM grill in the front door. As stated earlier, the window track causes interference. I simply mounted the whole thing on top of the interior door panel w/o any spacers. The Pioneer speaker grill was used and no new holes had to be drilled, just get some longer sheet metal screws.

The Pioneer 5.25" speakers WILL FIT behind the OEM speaker grill. Go figure. The creative thing I did was to come up with a way to re-secure the oem grill to the door panel. Not hard, just get a little creative. You do have to enlargen the sheetmetal hole quite a bit but there are no interference issues to speak of.

HTH.

PS can someone with a EWD tell me the positive and negative speaker wire colors for a 97 FZJ80? The colors have changed from my '96 EWD it seems!

thanks.

Just purchased Infinity Kappa 5 1/4 speakers for the front and back and infinity 3 1/2 for the fronts under the dash. Not sure if these will all mount in without any problems but I will let you all know, I really want to keep my stock look with the original grills. Has anyone tried installing these?

Pics please

Odd request I know, but if anyone doing the front door speakers would post up some pics of how the factory grill attaches to the door panel, I would greatly appreciate it.My door speakers have been changed to 3-way Kenwood with aftermarket grills. I have the original factory grills, but no idea how they were attached. Perhaps I'm missing some attachment hardware.Anyway, pics are appreciated.

just curious, why do people change out the factory head units? the only reason I can think is if mine broke, I am fairly happy with mine?

I once felt the same way (keep things original, it's fine the way it is), but you'd be surprised how much better a high end HU sounds compared to the OEM unit :)

Even with the factory speakers, the ability to adjust time alignment made a night and day difference in sound quality

It was the Ipod hook up for me mostly.
Did you get a wiring harness for the head unit or did you just hard wire it? Car toys quoted me $120 for the rewire(I said **LL NO at that price:flipoff2:) because they don't make a harness for the LX that I can find. I was going for the ipod jack as well.

You just buy the cord from Best Buy or any other stereo place. Plugs right in the back of the Alpine head unit. Like $20-$30, but I got mine included for one of my Alpines. Forget which one.

This is the adaptor included in this deal. KCE-422i.

Let's you power Ipod while listening to it, and you use the Alpine Head unit to scroll through Ipod. I like it personally. Very clean and simple.

edit: Maybe I'm off? Are you looking to hook it up to the factory head unit? I'm using an Alpine so factory I have no knowledge. Sorry. Maybe replied too quick. Either way, scrap the factory unit and just go with a cheap Alpine with Ipod controls. My $.02. Good luck.

If I am understanding you question correctly, to wire the hu into the LX, you need to get a wiring harness and then mod it so it will reach to the other side of the amp.

there are some threads that cover this mod.

finally got the pioneer speakers in and WOW, what a difference in sound, just a great upgrade, a thousand times better than stock, even with using the stock head unit, the front pioneers 6.5 ones, went in fairly easy, I just drilled new holes in the sheet metal and bolted them in using the aftermarket grill, It would be a lot more trouble to use the stock grill and I like the look of the pioneer cover

the rear doors were harder to do, in retrospect I would reccomend that people just use another set of the front 6.5 inch ones and drill and bolt those in as well, I had to remove the stock plastic bucket, cut the center out and basically fit the speaker using compression that the stock speaker cover gives during assembly. Again, it would of just been easier to use a larger speaker and redrill holes, I may do this later if I have troubles with the current mounts.

the front kenwoods will not work in the dash. I removed the dash tweeters as they are really bad quality and would not help the sound, you may be able to get the d side kenwood in, BUT the pass side is very shallow and you would have to rearange many things to make it work, I decided it was not worth the trouble. I will keep em and use them on my 55 resto.

all in all, I am very happy with the end results.
