The plan is that these are "drop-in" albeit there are always some slight modifications to make something fit...or so I have found out. Anyway...the grill was redesigned (even though it won't be used) and that is all "the dude" said was different between the two part numbers...one old...one new.

edog...when I put in my Alpine deck...I pulled the power antenna wire out...and did not connect it...that seemed to prevent the dome light fuse from blowing...haven't had any problems...and I am still using the factory amp. I am going to hope that the new harness is the same as my old harness...otherwise...I may have to re-wire. I don't listen to regular radio so, I didn't need the antenna...and that is what I think was causing the dome fuse to blow...not sure why???

Cool - thanks for the clarification. I ask only b/c my local Circuit City is liquidating as part of their failed bankruptcy plans and it seems they have a ton of car stereo speakers that are quickly becomming dirt cheap. I figured I'd hold out another week or so and see how far the prices drop and how quickly the stock disappears and then try some predatory buying :)

What am I missing here? I believe that the front door speakers are 5.25 inch speakers, and rears are 4 inch... Does a 6.5 inch really fit as a "drop in replacement"?

That is interesting, I did use the power antenna and I had the fuse issue?

an update:

I ordered 6 speakers from this place, ElectronicsBonanza.com, was under 100 for all w/ship

pioneer ts-g1642R
pioneer ts-g1042r
kenwood kfc-1061s

shipping was kinda expensive but the speaker prices were cheap, the only one I am somewhat unsure of that will fit are the kenwoods in the tweeter location, we will see.

Just put a pair of SONY XPLOD XS-R1641 6.5"/6 1/2" 4 WAY 220 W SPEAKERS in the front doors of my 93. They make the damn thing seem better than new. Bought them off of ebay for $52.74 with free shipping. Best 50 spots I've ever spent! Didn't really have to do any mods to the door panel, other than removing the 4 plastic fasteners that were there for the old speakers. You could probably get away with using the fasteners and the original screws from the old speakers. I didn't because the original screws had a large enough head on them to slightly touch the surround of the speaker. I was just a little concerned about them ripping the surround. Did the job in under an hour and retained the factory grills. BTW - the item is still available on ebay. Can you post up some pictures of your install, or at least the finished product? Do the OEM grills fit flush on the door panel, or do they have a gap?

chitown, Sorry I don't have any pictures during the process, but I do have the finished product. The grills stayed attached to the door panels when I removed them, so no need to space them or any of that business. Surprisingly easy door panels as well. Good ol simple engineering by Toyota. I've taken door panels off of other cars that I had to break a few fasteners before learning how they came apart.

I put TSG1641R Pioneers (6.5") in all 4 doors, along with a new Alpine head unit. $40 delivered for all 4 speakers off eBay, and $80 for the head unit at Best Buy when they closed them out last year. Best sounding $120 stereo I've ever had.

I cut a couple rings out of plywood and painted them black, mounted behind the grills on the rear door speakers. Didn't touch anything on the door trim/channel/panel, etc. Plug and play all the way. I could care less about a factory looking grill, but that's just me. Look how dirty my interior is. I have 4 kids and 2 dogs destroying it all the time anyway :)

These things actually thump pretty good. Absolutely no comparison to the crap that was in there. Great upgrade.

just curious, why do people change out the factory head units? the only reason I can think is if mine broke, I am fairly happy with mine?
It was the Ipod hook up for me mostly.

hmm, I just use a tape adapter, sound is prob better those going direct.....

The sound range of a tape and tape player don't even come close to the digital music in your iPod. You'll definitely appreciate the difference a direct adapter will make. :)

Guppie -

I changed out my head unit so that I could interface with my iPod and for XM radio. The sound you get from a tape adapter is horrible compared to a direct digital interface. Additionally, the functionality of a new head unit can be great...with the ability to fine tune the sound, etc.

With head unit prices dropping to very reasonable levels...it really doesn't make sense (in my mind) to keep the stock unit. For less than US$200 you can get a decade worth of audio improvement. Trust me when I tell you when you upgrade your head unit you will never imagine how you got along without a new one.

I especially like interfacing with the iPod. I keep an iPod in the glove box with a 100GB of music and a ton of playlists. I don't even take it out...just leave it in there and use the radio to scroll around and enjoy my music. With newer units you can also plug in any music that you can stick on a USB device (USB drive, mini hard drive, etc.). This means that you can (or at least this is what I did) take all of your CDs...convert them into "loseless" audio files, store them on a portable hard drive, and then play them through your stereo (upgraded) and enjoy all of your CD's (in CD quality sound) without the trouble of dragging them around. I have a ton of my CD's on a small 160GB drive that I can just plug into the USB connector and I am good to go.

Anyway, those are a few reasons to replace your head unit...other than replacing it due to it breaking. Just my thoughts...hope it helps.
