nice work, good to hear the pioneers sound good! I am interested in knowing if the sony xplods Kurst put in sound good and if they fit in the back doors with the stock grills. The Infinity Kappas did not fit at all, magnet is too big.

I put TSG1641R Pioneers (6.5") in all 4 doors, along with a new Alpine head unit.

Ok, so 6.5" fit in all the doors for sure?

If anyone is up for better sound at a slight increased price, look into the Phoenix Gold RSD component speakers. They are a big hit on the caraudio.com forums, conclusion seems better sound than the random Kenwood/Pioneer and even some Alpine drop-ins. Course they will really come alive with an aftermarket amp, they have an RMS of 60w which can't really be achieved by most headmarket amps.

Personally, I will be dropping in two 6.5" comp sets in (4 speakers, 4 tweets) if 6.5 fit all around.

Next question - anyone have a brilliant location for mounting a sub? I will not be using the factory location. My last system was fun, but overkill. Two 12" alpine type R fed 1200 watts, in 4 cubes. Got no interest in sacrificing 4 cubes of feet in an expedition rig =/

the 6.5's are by far the easisest ones to fit if you are ok using the aftermarket grills, IMO, the stock grills are a pain in the ass to keep, for the rears I had to cut out the bucket and I made it work but in hindsight it would of been much easier to simply plop 2 more of the 6.5's in the back doors. One note, you will need some longer screws to make them fit, the ones that come with the speaker are way too short, I was lucky in that my neighbor had some.....

For all tracking, I just put the Sony Xplod's from Walmart in:
Walmart.com: Sony 6 1/2" 4-Way Speakers, 270 Watts Power Handling, XSR1643: Auto Electronics

They fit pretty well up front under the stock grill, I will probably get rid of that though and use the Sony grill. All I had to do was make spacers for the speaker of about a 1/4 to 3/8", just a ballpark figure. To make the spacers I just took a standard bic pen and cut it to length then put the screws through the tube and the tube on the back side of the speaker mounting bracket. Worked well, and you can screw it down tighter if you want. The key is getting a speaker that has a mounting depth of less than 2". They sound good to me, but I am not an acoustics master, just wanted something a little better that the broke paper speakers

The only issue I am having is that they say they are a 4 way and I have a JVC KD-HD20 head unit that is four way, and can't get any sound to the rear doors now. I am guessing that is due to the fact that they are 4 way speakers.

Any recommendations would be welcome on how to fix that. I may still take them back and get a component set, the Blaupunkt's were recommended by Crutchfield. I think it was the GTC 652 for the front and GTX 652 for the rear door.

By the way the Blaupunkt component speakers do not require crossover's, which makes installation a little easier.

is there a year of scion model radios that had the ipod hookups for sure? a year model would help in finding the right one, there are a bunch on ebay........

Pretty much all of them will do it one way or another. Some have a distinct iPod function - others you can tag onto the CD changer function. There is a good writeup of all the available models here: https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/161849-scion-radio-installation-question.html

I got mine for $50. A couple of CDs of MP3s is all I need.

BTW: The T1806 is desirable because you can change the light color from a button in the front. Most of the others you will have amber light and need a soldering iron to change it.

VFRMAN, uabericm, That answered my question. ThanX

Speaker grill mounting

Here is the pic of the stick grill mounting that Miescha was looking for. By the way the speaker do have to be less than 2 inches for sure as far as mounting depth is is concerned around 44mm. If you need spacers most stereo shops have them laying around. I just tried the infinity reference series 6022si and they did not fit with the stock grills, they push out the door panel.

Going after the sony's now:cheers:

I'm glad I came across this as Amazon has the Infinity Reference Series 6022i for $50/pair (it's their deal of the day for today). While I'd really like a stock look to my speakers, Infinitys are great speakers and for that price, you just can't beat them.

I'm tempted to buy them and try to make them fit. Do you guys think this is a good idea?

Here's a link to the speakers: Amazon.com: Infinity Reference 6022i 6.5-Inch Two-Way Loudspeaker (Pair): Electronics

i am looking at replacing my audio system as well...

infinity builds good speakers, and can be found pretty cheap when you are patient. they also build a slim version, i think it is the 6022si IIRC.but harder to find deals on them. that would prolly be an easier install. but if you are going to go with the reg 6022i, let me know.

i have a set of polk 6.5 speakers that have never been used, floating around my garage for some time now. just have not made time to try and shoe horn them in.

IF you guys see my post above the 6022si did not work well even with spacers, they ended up pushing the door panel out. If you got rid of the stock grill and did some cutting of the inside panel they would be awesome and have an amazing sound. But I like the stock look without pusing the panel out thus breaking over time.

We didnt get front door speakers here, only rear doors and in dash, which i need to replace, so this thread has been helpful, if the part No;s are available here. Want to do splits with tweeters in front, door speakers in front, and rear door speakers, as wella s the sub and amp.

I currently have a amp and sub under the passenger seat

Really happy with the performance of this unit and it is a nice snug fit between the seat/floor and runners no mounting required.

I am using an alpine head unit with Ipod, select shuffle and let it go on the long trips.

Here's Crutchfield's measurement:

top-mount depth: 1-7/8"

Those are TOO DEEP for 96 & 97 FJ80s due to side impact bar placing window track inward = 1 & 3/8 inch rule (SEARCH IS YOUR FRIEND). AFAIK, no 96 or 97 has ever been fitted with speakers having a top-mount depth: 1-7/8" behind the stock grilles. In my exhaustive searching, I found no 5.25 inch speakers with a top-mount depth less than 1-7/8". FLAMES . . . one mfg. had a reversed spider model designed for European thin doors coming out last year. Never did find US distributors stocking it. The design was similar to the OEM Lexus Pioneers.

Well I purchased the same Pioneer TS-G1642R Speakers for the fronts. Hoping to install today.

Im already running a aftermarket Alpine HU. and have gone through some fuse issues. I have a thread on it somewhere I can dig up.

Two things I did find. Power ant. connected blows the dome fuse. Factory amp (although even bypassed) connected blows my dome fuse and royaly pisses off my HU (turns on and off in 2sec intervals).

The first stereo shop I went to, to have the HU installed (not that I couldn't, but didnt have enough time personally and was headed out of town the next), Installed a 15am dome fuse instead of the factory 10amp. :(. Obviously they struggled on that parts to and took IMO the bad shortcut. Ive since unplugged the power ant. wire on the HU and unplugged all the factory amp stuff. Put a 10amp fuse back in, and so far zero problems.

I did find that merley replacing the HU made a huge difference in sound, with all 9 stock speakers running. It was even better when I bypassed the factory amp and left it with just the 6 stock speakers running. So..... My guess is with new speakers I will be pretty happy with the sound quality for my daily driving uses.

Sorry if any of that was repetitive, just my experience and .02.

i just installed the same pioneers, up front, and the sound its much better. you will need some spacers, to get the magnet off that bar in the door. 1/4" is too little and 1/2" is too much. didnt measure exactly as i just used whatever material i had laying around...washers and some nuts i think. youll also need longer screws as mentioned. i put those little metal clips that came with the speakers into the oem square opening and pinched em tight to keep em in place. these captured the screws and all was good. was able to use the oem speaker grilles...didnt have to touch anything in that regard. if you use a thicker spacer, the speaker itself will push the door card out, and the clips wont engage.

i got em for $39 CDN here...so i think im going to grab another pair and install them in the back. now if there was an easy way to get an amp hooked up...or even an amped sub. i kinda like the under seat powered amp idea..not sure if vehicles with rear heaters would have enough room...

hmm, that's interesting. You were able to retain the factory speaker grill. I'll have to try that. Thanks.

I have a 96 too and prefer Pioneer as well. Like others, I also took the tact of mounting the grill cover from the outside. I ended up putting 5 1/4 Pioneers in the back doors which required less cutting and sound great. Every speaker is a Pioneer in my truck along with a powered sub. Gotta have the jams! :grinpimp:

I put in Polk DB651 6.5" speakers in the front doors, they came with a mounting adapter, I attached the mounting adapter to the sheet metal, then replaced the door panel, and attached the speaker, screwing through the panel and into the adapter. This made for a solid attachment, though I had to use the Polk speaker grille. The grille touches the dash when the door is closed, but it is not a problem.

In the rear I used Polk DB521 5.25" speakers, however, they are deeper than the 6.5" speaker, and don't sound as good. I would just use the 6.5" in the rear doors if I were to do it again. To install the 5.25" speakers, I had to cut a wider circle in the sheet metal. I replaced the door panel and bought a generic 5.25/6.5" spacer ring for ~$10-$15. I screwed the spacer through the panel into the sheetmetal, then attached the speaker to the spacer. I used the polk grilles in the rear as well.

I expiremented with painting the black spacer a brown color which matches the door panel and it turned out great. When I find the time, I will paint the polk grilles as well. They will still look different than stock grilles, but I think the only person that will know is someone who saw the originals, even then they probably won't notice.

I disconnected the amp and am just running the 4 speakers from a JVC headunit, and it sounds awesome compared to the stock speaker set up. No, I am not an audiophile. AS I said above, I would just go with 6.5" speakers in the back instead of the 5.25", I did not take measurements, but I think the actual difference in mounting them is negligible (I think the actual cut out diameter for mounting, is only a 3/8" difference, according to the Polk website), but the sound difference is notable.

FYI-I got the Polk speakers for 40% off at the Circuit city liquidation. About $55-59 per pair.

Got mine installed (Pioneer 1642R's). I took the lazy way out and mounted on the outside. I dont mind the Pioneer grill and can hardly see them with the doors closed anyway. They sound good, and worlds better than those funky a$$ stock ones ;). Money's tight, so the rears will have be later.

I'm gonna try asking this here before making a new thread -

At what point would you guys add a second battery / run all the speakers to the second battery so as to not compromise some of the critical electric functions on the 80? IE locking the diffs, lights, etc

This is my daily system. I remove the sub when wheeling. It pushes ~700w
6.5" Phoenix Gold Comps front getting 75w each
5.25" Alpine Type S rear getting 30w each
12" alpine type R getting 500w
