Hi all, please point me in the right direction if this has already been discussed - my '90 fj80 with the carbureted 3f engine has been having trouble accelerating in 1st and 2nd, very herherher herky, but then evens out after 3rd gear. Google/forum searches pointed at the fuel pump as possible culprit, after changing some other bits. Then today, engine turns over but wont start.. battery brand new, alternator is fine, it's trying but won't catch even with pumping the gas pedal - so again thinking it's probably that already suspect fuel pump. Where exactly is the fuel pump located? Engine bay or down by the gas tank? Is it a relatively easy thing to change myself or should I have it towed to a shop? (I've done a good amount myself so far as long as a lift/pit or special tools aren't required). Thanks!

The fuel pumps on all US Spec 80 Series years are inside the fuel tank and have a filter sock attached. All models in the US are fuel injected but the tank setup should be similar for a carburetor application. Good news the top of the fuel tank can be accessed from inside under the second row of seats is an access panel. No need to drop the tank from underneath. We also have separate fuel filters in the engine bay.

Went back today with some tools and daylight to see what was going on... Carburetor is getting gas so maybe it's not the fuel pump? What would be the next logical thing to check? Ignition coil, spark plugs, distributor?

So... Replaced the ignition coil and distributor contact point, as well as the gas filter that's threads into the top of the manifold (it's been on the list, but just received the part). Spark plugs had been done abt a year ago. It started, but verrrry reluctantly and then had extremely rough idle and eventually just died. What should I look at next??! I'm losing my mind

Double checked the distributor contact point in relation to the rotor.. had it screwed in a bit too tight, and thus a bit too much of a gap when that contact point opens. Adjusted that and it's starting up much smoother... Hopefully it holds
