Also put an amp and subs in for the moment, much better sounding! I have a big dual 12” box, but that’s going away for a shallow mount 10”.

I need to find a good spot to mount the 10”. I already have 6x9s in the back door, notnsure inwant to cut up the door more for a 10”.

Hello,

Make a cut for 10 in. in both back doors, mount the speakers and do not look back. Much better sound.

Minor mystery smell the other day.

As I'm climbing the 1 overpass in our town, steep climb from a stop, I rev up to 2800-3000k shifting. Not really flogging on it but a couple of times now I get a faint burning smell. EGT's aren't high so I'm not sure what would smell "burning" for a few seconds at the top?

There's no leaks, at least no obvious ones. The oil drain on the turbo has some light oil around it, was not really impressed with that gasket, I should probably replace it.

and A photo for fun

I haven't done much of anything but drive lately. The list is growing of things I'd LIKE to do vs what I NEED to do.

NEEDS:
Turn up Fuel - just a little time and flexibility is all I need here
New Headlights - new OEM kit may order those soon, the OG's are a bit dim
Knuckle kit - @PabloCruise and I have a birf packing party planned whenever this funk goes away
Tire Carrier - finish latch mechanism, design other side for cooler or something
Gauges - I'd like to put a good water temp gauge one as the factory is vague at best. Oil pressure would probably be another biggie as well.
Wash/Claybar/Wax - when the weather starts getting better (well today will almost be 80) I would like to do a really good detail on it.
Windshield gasket - it's leaking between the gasket and glass, my guess is the sealant is gone or cracked and letting water in.

WANTS:

Intercooler - looking at a barrel setup in place of the crossover pipe cooler IAT's are never a bad thing plus it would be 100% able to revert to stock.
Soft Top - Huge want, just going to $$$, I may just go with a bikini top and weather cover to keep it dry. The rear half doors are still an issue. I love having the top off, but I still want the weather protection with all the afternoon storms we have.
Better stereo - I have a single DIN, bluetooth Pioneer, 12" sub and speakers and it sounds good, however the deck is an Entry Level Pioneer and not that great. Thinking of the Sony Double DIN media player of some sort.
Better Turbo - Looking at changing to something better sized for the 3.4L as the OEM sized 8cm CT26 is too big. I have some messages out to people about the best route to go here. had I known better, I would have done this when I got my CT26 rebuilt to begin with. On one hand I like staying with a Toyota turbo as thats just cool, but I know it's a dated design.

Questions:

Overhead console
- mine used to have an old school CB in it. Do you put one back in when I won't use it 99% of the time??? What else would you put in an overhead console?

Shocks - I'm thinking Bilstein or maybe Tough dog? Any other thoughts/preferences?

PS: I also have a claybar kit. Just sayin...

As I'm climbing the 1 overpass in our town, steep climb from a stop, I rev up to 2800-3000k shifting.

I just can't get the idea of a "steep climb" in Nebraska into my head... Ha!

In other news, I turned up the fuel the other day, I think I need to turn it up some more. I believe I did around a quarter turn, but no black smoke evident at all on full throttle so up we go some more.

Here's a project I've been thinking about since I got the BJ74.

I love having a hardtop. It's kind of a pain to take on/off like a weekly thing, not going to happen.
I love driving without the top, most of the time. We get A LOT of afternoon showers/hail here so lots of risk. The interior is really nice on this so I don't want to mess it up.
As much as I want a softop, it's not in the cards right now $$$ wise. That would pretty much solve it all.
I've toyed with the idea of a safari/bikini top and then buying a trail cover if it rains while I'm at work. It's fairly cheap and I will probably do that, but it's not without fabrication ~$250.00 so not bad. And driving in a storm is still going to get things wet, Not too mention that whole issue with the back full doors. I still will never understand why they didn't half-door ALL FRP top rigs.

That said, all 73/74 series owners have dealt or will deal with rusty windows slides, shrunken gaskets on the slider windows. Those windows are great overall. The dog loves them. They are like an RV window, and a bit of a pain to take out, fix and put back in with adhesive.

My first thought was to make a modular hard top. You can take the sides off for a safari top option, pull sides and top. Would make the whole thing easier to deal with removing/storing. However you still have those dumb doors to deal with, and a chunk of fabrication on an old top, thats pretty much impossible to replace. It is however repairable being fiberglass so thats a plus.

I also thought about finding a spare hard top and hacking/mod it. I might, but again they are hard to find.
So I found some threads about gull windows on 80 series, troopies etc which are pretty great, but not 100% useful if you have passengers in a BJ74. I believe some of the Euro rigs had FRP with solid windows for tax purposes. Having dog windows open, or kid windows is good air flow. Getting closer. I decided with RV windows they are replaceable so I could fit some sort of removable window or soft window to get almost a safari top type of setup. Those side windows are big on the 73/74.

Low and behold, I found a guy thats really good with fiberglass, hacking up jeep tops, modding them pretty much all what I had in my head so most of the thinking/design has been done and tested. Here is a good thread, albeit Jeep, about this guys hard top modding, and how he engineers it for other companies and such: Converting a factory JK/JKU hardtop to modular

The idea, pull the sliding windows out.
Repair/restore them.
Get a piece of Lexan, shape to the window size. Put a sealing trim on it, and "lock" it in place with clips or something on the inside. Lots of options.
Pull these out for more of a safari top with hard top feel. Easily put back on in a storm and you are only out $60ish buck for lexan if you break it. You could use wood, aluminum whatever, gull wing, soft window (to roll up and store easier)

Window installed in top:
AssembledQuickReleaseWindowSide1_zpsg4188686.jpg

Taken out: you can see the clips on the inside. Lots of options here for latching.
AssembledQuickReleaseWindowSide2_zpskzpkleux.jpg

Lexan piece and trim: The snaps he was using for a soft roll up window insert, which he said works fine with the hard lexan/trim setup.

So I plan to move forward with the window mods fairly soon. They are 100% easily put back to stock and it gives a way to repair the OEM windows. Now the best form of this would be to have a lexan setup with sliding windows which can be done, it will just take some work. That way you can still get airflow without removing windows.

Of course, this could all change depending on how the setup looks without a window in place. I'm not sure how much of a lip is on the FRP tops for the glass frame to attach to?

In the future I will be making some half doors or my own removable glass doors or a new tailgate setup. Not sure.

Man, you have been putting some thought into this!

Could you use snaps in the lexan?

Yeah I've been thinking pretty much ever since I got it  It's possible to do the snaps in lexan, although I wonder if it will let weather in? maybe not be as easy to take off??

Genius. Love everything about this. Get going!

I'm planning, this social distancing it making it hard! lol. I think the lexan and trim may be the best. For now it's figuring out the right thickness of lexan, the right seals then get it ordered. Hopefully I can get this going soon.

Went out and bought a 10mm wrench that was longer, ~8" Amazing how quick it is to change the fueling amount with the right wrench. Turned up the fuel about 1/2 a turn from previous. Still no roalin' coal which is fine, EGT's up and full boost quicker and power is up. I really notice it in 3rd gear there is more pull on "hills"
Still have yet to hit 1200 on "hills" 65+ 5th gear but I really don't have a big long hill to test.
I max boost at 10.5ish so I still plan to go up to 14ish, I just need either an adjustable/set wastegaste, or boost controller.
Then a barrel intercooler will help some as well.

Also, in between the long list of outdoor spring cleanup, I painted the front skid plate. It was 72 degrees on saturday.

Saturday evening our little rural town had a "cruise night" Hundreds of cars showed up to cruise the strip ranging from muscle cars, 30's coupes, 70's cars, lots of mustangs/camaros, old truck, rat rods, 90s military M1070 Oshkosh and of course the only 70 series  err only Land Cruiser...well the only Toyota besides my tundra. Lots of thumbs up! (the key word was stay in your cars)

My wife son and I took the cruiser, my daughters were too cool and drove in the tundra.
Later my wife spotted this on the "cool rides" section on facebook.

Well fast forward to Easter morning....we go from 72 degrees plus to this...
icy as heck, extremely windy

thankfully it's spring and won't last long.

Here's just a video I took to help someone on another thread. You can see the boost/RPMs and my guage showing EGT/Boost. Maybe helpful for someone on how a new/fresh 13BT should run.

13BT - fully rebuilt, approx 5000miles
Rebuilt CT26, 11psi max
REbuilt Injector Pump/Injectors : Fuel screw turned up 3/4 turn from stock
255/85r16' tires

"Normal" acceleration when getting on a 2 lane/65mph road.

Now, it will go faster(ish) lol as you can see i Didn't flog on it or go past 3k. My best 0-60 speed before turning up fuel according to an app was 16.8. I didn't get that picture, so the only proof I have is the 17.5 time.

Upgrade time. headlights are weak on these for sure. These are OEM Koito headlights, possibly original, and they are tired.

I went with possibly the best, cheapest OEM Purchase you can make.

Toyota 81110-60P70
For those that don't know, its an OEM H4 upgrade for 7" round headlights for stupid cheap. I ordered from Bommarito Toyota in Missouri as they had the best price $56.62 shipped. I ordered on a wednesday, recieved it early friday morning.

The kit includes:
H4 housings
Phillips H4 bulbs
Wiring harness
Relays
Zip Ties
Dialectric Grease

1 banana job right? We are working on old land cruisers.
Pull the 3 screws that hold chrome ring that holds the light to the headlight bucket. Stripped out rusted screws, of course.

IMG_7307.jpg

I ended up pulling the whole bucket out. Thankfully I could use pliers/vice grips/liquid wrench and they came out. Unfortunately I had to use cheap hardware as the store didn't have OEM Gold Plated JIS screws forged from the sweat and tears of Mr. Toyota himself.

On the list to order...someday.

Oh yeah, this little gem was hanging out. Only on this side, and the only spot in the whole engine bay. I just put some paint/rust cover on it for now. Add it to the list.

IMG_7308.jpg

Shiny new headlight bling that doesn't look like some terrible ebay chinese LED light.
Yes I do need to clean behind my grill. Watching any @c2dfj45 threads make me feel inadequate as a cruiser owner :D

IMG_7310.jpg

There are rubber/plastic covers over these holes in the front of the 70 series. Not sure what they are for, but I pulled the plugs and ran the light housing through there. I will get a soft rubber plug to block off the hole all the way. I also ran the wires and tied them along the A/C line for the drier. I hope thats ok to do???

I put the relays right next to where they mounted the off-road light relays with self-tappers for the moment into the fan shroud. I will probably change this at some point. the engine bay on a 13BT is pretty packed. I should redo the relay wiring that the Aussies put there, but for the moment it works and is low priority.

I need to aim them correctly and do the obligatory night shots so you can actually see them, but the difference is HUGE.

Low beams

High-beams

High Beams and AUX lights.

Overall one of the best/cheapest upgrades you can do. Ridiculous value in this kit, not too mention it's all OEM!

The only issue I have is that it doesn't register my "brights" on in the dash. I need to look up how to fix it, but it's because you don't plug in one side of the headlights the the resistance is difference not allowing that bright light indicator to come on.

Fix one thing and...
Oh and it appears my brake master is leaking now...off to research upgrades and/or call @cruiseroutfit

I feel like I can have a good laugh at this... I'm one of the scary people who often order new hardware by part number.
