Hey fellas, I acquired an 82 FJ45 LHD imported from Middle East. It is missing the skid plate under the tranny/transfercase. Who knows if it would have had one originally? What would be a suitable replacement if I were to search for a used one? Would a post 1979 from an FJ40 skid plate work on it? Did skid plates change from 1976 up to 82? Any input appreciated.

Thanks

You need a 8/80+ four speed skid plate. Will double check but believe all 4X series from 8/80+ are same as long as a four speed.

Did a little checking all BJ4X and FJ4X had the same skid plate 8/80-4/86. 51495-60032 is the part number which appears to be NLA. The HJ47 had a different skid plate and it's part number is 51495-60042.

The only later skid plates I have are already on vehicles and I have not pulled them off to compare to one another. Sorry.

@Honger might know someone that can get that part used in the UAE. They seem to have an endless supply of parts around Dubai.

I know he mentioned going back even though he has moved back to the US. Really need to put on my thinking cap out parts that may be easy find. Mainly those that fit in a suitcase. Skid plate may not qualify as a carry on.

Finding a 8/80+ skid plate from any 40 series in the US is not going to be a easy task. One from a earlier four speed cut down may be a option. I test fitted a five speed skid plate on a 79 FJ40 and it uses the same fixed nuts in the frame. Compared the 8/80+ four speed skid plate to the 10/82+ five speed skid plate and mounting holes are in the same location.

LOL. I had no intention of him getting it personally. I was thinking more like, an email, a money transfer, and FedEx.

I can source parts from the UAE... and will have the occasional container of goodies arriving (maybe one per year). But sadly, skid plates are a commonly "missing" part from 40-series in the Middle East. I honestly think they just get removed because they get in the way of guys working on them... so they get left off.

@FJ40 that green thing, your best bet is to source one here in the States from someone like @Wadesters or the classifieds here.

That seems to be the case everywhere. But I wonder if possibly because the design of the skid it doesn't do anything from preventing sand giving get. Modern skid plate are usually multiple piece that start at the bumper so it closed in. The later skid plate used on the one piece transfer are rolled up at the front. Was this for strength or help keep stuff from getting above the skid plate and collecting there. :meh:

Just happen to be around my skid plates for the next day or two and could get pictures of the different types if that would help.

No one asked but before I left I snapped a few pictures of the skid plates, known a bash plates in Australia. Bash plates which for me at least describes them better as I rarely skid over things but rather bashed down on them.

First one is both four speed covers as Toyota calls them a cover

This is a 8/80 cover sitting on top of a 74-7/80 cover. Cut down 74-7/80 and then weld a reinforcement flange in the transmission drain opening and would be very close.

Holes in the frame to bolt the cover on remained the same for the four speeds. Five speed cover bolts on as well.

Question for you, Living in the Past. I took off the skid plate from an '81 HJ47 but it doesn't seem to fit on my 10/82 HJ47. Part of it hits the t-case. Any thoughts?

I see no difference in any HJ47. From the start of the HJ47 8/80 until the end of production. Have a picture of your skid plate? The HJ47 show different than the FJ4X and BJ4X but same for all HJ47s.

I did fail to mention that I had a 5 speed put in it so it moved the drive train back a few inches and that's probably why part of the skid plate hits up against the tranny.
