I'm doing this very same thing right now after something in my tank was prohibiting fuel to the carb (new fuel pump + rebuilt OG carb). I hooked a fuel line from the supply side of the fuel filter to a gas can and problem solved (fuel was now filling up the carb sight bowl). I drained my tank the other day and I had at least an inch of fine rust sitting at the bottom of the tank. I removed the tank today -- looking into the tank its rusty BUT it might be worth boiling and sealing it. My pickup tube was very rusty but cleaned up pretty well too (no holes are thin areas at all). Conventional wisdom says buy a new tank BUT the aftermarket ones have NO drain plug which is annoying. And I'll have to paint or rhino line the new one too.
For a 1980 aftermarket tank my options are:
Amazon = $220 (no drain and no pickup tube)
Cruiser Corp = $460 (I've heard people say its the exact same one as the one on amazon/rockauto)
Toyota Parts Overstock = $550 (guessing its OEM and comes with the pickup tube and with a drain plug)

Any insights on which tank to buy or if I should try restoring first??
Oh and for those wondering about removing the tank, I jacked up the frame and removed the driver side leaf spring, the tank will slide out like a dream.
