Alberto, where are you guys getting your body and paint done? I'm searching for a good place here in Nashville. Seems that everyone here has too much money and wants $10,000 - $20,000 to do it.

View attachment 1100930 Alberto, Did that guy on the right pass himself off as some kind of parts guru to get you to buy the beer. He pulled that trick the last time we met for lunch. :)

You know, Charles @1978HJ45, now that you mention it, the guy on the right @beno did try to pull that on us @94SRUNNER to get free beer. Luckily, we got smarter and let him pay the bill :grinpimp:

I felt sorry for him. He kept mumbling something about being a famous parts guy.

I got a quote this morning for $650 to blast the entire body at StripMaster here in town. Recommendation from a friend in the business of custom motorcycles. Pretty good price if you ask me.

Balance that with a high end paint quote for $10,000 minimum by a shop here in town called Team Witt. I'm sure they do a great job, but that's out of the price range for what I'm willing to pay someone for a paint job - especially on a truck, and especially when I've done just about everything myself on this so far. $3000 maybe, but $10K? Whew!

Hey Scott @Vae Victus,

I am, too, taking the entire body to get chemically stripped at a place in Cincinnati. I got quoted $450 to strip the tub and then some extra for the other pieces (hood, aprons, windshield frame, which I have to bring them to get a quote on those).

I am still in the process of getting some quotes for the paint job. I got one from a painter in Columbus, OH and he mentioned about $5,000 for body work and paint. I am still waiting to hear from other two places, but I hope to pay around the same $ figure that you mentioned, around $3,000 or so. We shall see.

Keep me posted on what you find, I will do the same :)

hummm, i see on mud a lot about paint and body prices. it seems those that shop for "cheap" get what they pay for.
sometimes a deal just isn't in the end.
you want cheap then go buy a paint gun, rent a booth or set up a tent and spray it yourself. chances are your results will be the same.

I agree @crushers. I guess that I will have to see how much metal (or lack of thereof) comes back once the body is chemically cleaned, and of course, in what condition. That would directly relate to the amount of body work that will need to be completed to get it back in shape :)

nice thing about 40s, so easy to do metal work on. even s***ty work ends up looking acceptable, look at all the trucks coming out of Costa Rica and you will see what i mean.

Crushers,
I personally don't see $3-$5,000 as "cheap" but that is probably because it's my first time to research the cost of paint jobs and because I just haven't come to accept the fact that:

A) not many folks do this type of work

B) Even fewer do it well

C) those that do it well, know about A and B, and know how long it takes to do it right.

i am not sure about your area but here body shops are disappearing. the good shops, which i have yet to find here, charge a premium. they know they have no real competition so they can name their price. In Alberta there was two that did top notch work, $100/hr/man. but the results were as expected.
there is two shops in the local area that are recommended. i have tried them both. lets put it this way, i can do better work in my own shop. I just hate how the paint gets all over everything so i would need to build an extension just for paint.
$3K is definitely cheap. $5K, if you can find a retired painter that is working out of his shop then that might score you a good paint job. at least here.
IN Costa Rica paint is $500. take a look at Angel's sale ads and you can see what that buys you.

Another video I want to share with you guys to a trip my buddies back home did to San Juan de Manapiare (Venezuela) back in 2013 and they just put the video together. The trip was completed in three 70-series (FZJ71) and one 40-series (FJ40).

Hope you guys enjoy the video!

After two years in the making, we have a final version of the Angel Falls video that I wanted to share with you guys:

Hope you guys enjoy it!

Reading through your thread and discovered this gem... Had no idea you were one of the guys from this trip. I just saw the article in Trails a few months back and I'm desperate to make this trek someday. What an epically manly cruiser escapade. If you ever need to repeat that trek and have a spare seat I'll lug winch cables and replace axles everyday to have the opportunity.

Okay... I'll go back to reading your thread now.

Fantastic BJ40 project... Looking forward to seeing the rest of the build.

@Honger,

Glad you enjoyed the video and trip report!

Some more about this trip can be found on my BJ70 thread from Page 8 to 13:

Thanks for the props,
