So did the box provide structural strength/ rigidity for the cab as well as a place for the body mount, seat mount and eyebolt/anchor for the seat belts?

Yes, for sure. Once the "bench" is removed the back 6 or 8" of the floor is quite wobbly as well as the rear wall without the vertical stiffeners. If you go and see miker's handiwork in the link I gave several posts above you will see what I plan to do.

There will be a rectangular structural tube under the floor after I remove the factory X brace cab mounting brackets. I will also run a ≈5" wide piece of 1/4" plate across the top side of the floor and add new vertical stiffeners and corner bracing.

I agree... I have not decided if I am going to mount the seats on the roll cage or on top of a giant tool box. I have to get the seats in the cab and see just how much room there is. The Toybox shifter will be a bit of an issue with it's location but I could maybe design a tool box that was full width of the cab, seats mounted on top, that opens on the ends or possibly the seats could flip up. Maybe three access points? both ends and under a console to get at stuff in the middle? I dunno for sure yet. :meh:

i was just thinking out loud, didn't mean to hijack. sorry.

No worries Wayne - I welcome comments and ideas and love nothing more than chatting about my build.

Did the ":meh:" throw you off? I used him to show I had not made up my mind yet - not to put down your thoughts. Keep the ideas comming

redoing the design with a built in tool storage would be kinda cool...

X2, this is a great idea. Especially if you could incorporate a stock door into it, like say from a glove/map box. it might be do-able if you made the door open up vs. out. If that makes sense.

What would be best IMO is if the seat and top of the box would hinge up to open the top and gain access. Not enough room for that I don't think. I'm going to develop the cage, seats and seat base/storage box together so as to come up with the best access available in the design.

To that end, I have finished cleaning up the spot weld buttons and misc factory welds today. Miker had his all blasted and in primer and so was able to weld up his base plate permanently. I will be blasting the cab later and will not be welding the plate down just yet or fixing the rust holes. That means my next step is to fab up a base plate to take the place of the bench and give me anchor points for the cage.

Nice job so far and seeing your work I have no doubt this is going to be a top notch rig. About the acces to the under seat storage, did you think about a rear seat folding system like you find in a lot of older cars. You lift the front of the seat part up first and pull it forward. After that you can flip the rear of the seat cushon over to the front. I hope this makes sence.

Yup, think I know what you mean. Whatever I end up with I will be using the seats I rescued from a 94? Prelude. They are very comfy high back buckets.

I have been pondering the thought of cable shifters so the shifters could be put wherever you want them. I'm not sure if the toy-box has the same shifter requirments as a 203/Split-case but I will be investigating futher some I get the drivetrain hanging in the 40.

I've seen triple stick systems here on MUD and I'm not opposed to an air shift though it's likely more complicated that required. I have yet to see where the toybox shifter will end up. If it's bad enough I will look at other options

I got myself a tach bezel from HJ47

Kinda...

There is only about 7" below the seats when situated in a comfy position. Less than I had envisioned but I think I will still make a storage box under them. The work I did on the roll cage way back about a year ago was not wasted. I will be able to use all but one piece as is but I need to buy another length of 1-3/4" DOM to finish it out.

I put the lid back on and spent some time planning out the next steps. I want to pull the drive train out and add the Toybox in order to properly cut out the floor. That may or may not include doing the rebuild on the h55f and splitcase. Maybe a clutch too.
