same with anything, easy does it.
aluminum is soft so my feelings are that sand would be too abrasive to use.

you are in Calgary and Topgun will give you a quote on glass beading and PC. i have used them for a decade or more before i moved and they ALWAYS treated me excellent.

I agree and I agree - Hugh's shop has always been a great place for powder. Ceramic too. We (at work) moved to an outfit called JIT a few years ago because Hugh couldn't handle our volume at a reasonable turn around time. His price and quality was fine though. JIT has an automated wash and bake line (overhead conveyor system) and can put through much more volume. JIT is more of a comercial type outfit that doesn't do much in the way of walk-in type work. In addition to the automated line they also have several ovens that are large enough for a frame (as does Top Gun). I spend enough through my position at work that I can get a very friendly rate at there.

cool, never heard of them but then i normally didn't run huge quanities through.
more of 'tear a cruiser down, give the parts i wanted PC to Top Gun and wait for the call' process.

i have to say, i love the work you do.

Right back atcha - wish I could make all the cool rigs you've done in the past few years

Great link Dan - never did a search on the subject :o

Thanks!

Glass bead and powder is perfect, I have easy access to both. I notice you didn't blast your 3B alum parts but just did a clean and clear powder. Those are the parts that I was told not to blast by an aquaintance of mine - he specifically said "don't blast the aluminum" - and that was why I was asking about it above. without having spoken to him yet I suspect it just comes down to his personal preference. I can't see blasting doing any damage to the covers or cases as long as you don't hit the seal areas etc. to hard.

Definitely doesn't do damage. In this case we just wanted to clear over the original finish. Tried it, and love the results. That said, if there's a spot a brush can't get in to clean, I turn the air way down (30-40 psi) and give it a quick blast with the abrasive.

You can hardly notice the difference. Look to the left of the "Aisin" logo. I blasted there for some stubborn dirt. I guarantee you wouldn't find that in a hundred years of looking without me pointing it out.

Damn sister-in-law bought herself a nice used bike on Friday. I took it for a blast up the hwy a ways and made sure it was all in working order for her.

I say "damn" sister-in-law because there was no snow on my driveway until i parked the bike in the garage.

Good day to clean parts.

Washed and bead blasted the aluminum cases. Nearly done here - you can see the original darker color on the upper left side there...

getting things / keeping things organized so I have some hope of finding them later. Stripped the 40 series top plate - you can see the fork bars there center frame

I showed you guys the PO mod where they cut off the rod to actuate 5th gear - well, I picked up the same rod from a 60 series top from a friend hoping it would work but really had no idea if it would. Turns out they are in fact identical. The only difference between the 40 and 60 series tops is the upper bar (and the shifter location of course). The three fork rod assemblies are the same.

Hum... This shi* you call snow !!! Here in Quebec we got
9 celcius . And the snow is got since last week.

No, it's not what I call a big snow fall. We've certainly had worse. We had a big one 5-6 years ago on May 10th. That one was like 2 ft. The difference, at least from what I remember living in northern Ontario as a kid is that in 72 hours it will all be gone. Then in 72 more hours we'll get another dump. And so on all through April and into May. We definitely had more snow when we lived in Ontario but once it melted it was gone.

There is an unwritten urban myth kinda thing here in Calgary that one does not do any yard work or prep for summer or planting flowers/ trees until the May long weekend because it can and will snow heavily. According to the records we get more snow in early spring than the rest of winter.

What's your elevation there TC?

8100 feet thats life at altitude I can,t wait for cruise Moab I am just going to lay on red rock and thaw out hope you Canucks can make it , if you do bring me a chocolate bar eh ''''

How do you like your PA blasting cabinet? Is it worth buying or would you buy something different if you do it again? I've been eyeballing one for a long time.

I think there is one or two from the RMLCA going down to Moab

It works pretty good. Size would be the only complaint I have. Seal all seams with caulking or silicone as you build it and use a shop vac to keep the dust down so you can see. I have a light inside - two would be better. When you open the door it makes a mess on the floor after a while. #7 glass bead is slippery on the concrete.

A couple tips for blast cabinets in general (we have two bigger ones at work):

-Don't put too much media in the hopper - the added weight can prevent the suction hose from being able to pull media up to the gun.

-Keep the air dry - we have a big dryer at work but at home I get a little moisture in the gun and it causes a clump in the gun. Also, I put it away wet one time and got a bit of corrosion in the gun that I had to clean out before it would work.

-If you start to notice the abrasive force trailing off but still have lots of air flow - take your finger off the trigger (or foot pedal) to stop the air - plug the gun with your free hand - pull the trigger. This will force the air down the suction hose backwards and blow out any debris that may have stopped the media from reaching the gun.

Who can I get in touch with for small parts that I may need? I've read that CDan and beno can find those little things like the plugs in the top cover etc. I have dealt with 4wheelauto before with success. I know I need a few things but I'll wait til I get a complete list before actually ordering anything. I need the boot for the clutch fork at the bell housing....

Another thing I need is the boot for the shifter - Georg supplied the new one here but it seems to be incorrect compared to the old one. I ran the part number through toyDIY but that site is useless now without the exploded diagrams - it just says its a shifter boot but I can't see where it says for what. I'll call orangefj45

I've gotten things from Cdan before. I had them delivered to the Montana Shipping Outlet and either drove to the Sweetgrass one and picked them up myself, or if I wasn't in a rush I asked Jerome (a RMLCA club member that lives in Fernie) to pick them up. He gets to Montana a couple of times a month and gets to Calgary a couple of times a month. He also has two 45s.

If you get them delivered direct, you will have the UPS charges to deal with.

Things are looking good there Kevin.

Could you fit a 16" rim in that blasting
cabinet of yours?

i went from Dan from 4 wheel to John at Radd Cruisers and have been happy with the service. John knows Land Cruisers intimately which helps a lot in the work i do. (his pricing seems pretty good)

if you need something from over in Japan then Dave at Japan 4X4 is the guy to talk to.

also Steve Tetu is supposed to be good to deal with although i have not given him a try myself.

what are you going to finish the aluminum with? clear coat? raw? if you have said, sorry, i missed it.

Kevin, your nearest Toyota dealer should be able to help, if they have
microfiche for the old Landcruiser parts.
The boot (33555-20060 )) on the left looks like a boot for the three speed transmission.
Changed mine three years ago on my 1973 FJ45.
Cheers

Kevin:

The T-case is looking great all cleaned up! If you were closer, I'd tell you to bring them over and clear coat them here. I really can't get enough of the clear powder coat on our bits. It's like an engine that you really want to pet!

CDan and Beno can definitely find you those little bits, and might save you some time if they are simply not available. Dan really is scary to talk to, because he knows off the top of his head an awful lot of parts and their availability.

I've also used John/RADD cruisers, Japan4x4 and 4wheelauto. RADD and Japan4x4 have been excellent, 4wheelauto got something wrong, when I thought my request was a relatively common one. I'd still give them another try.

Dan
