Well I was finally able to get that damn mainshaft out of the winch. Honestly the 3 jaw gear puller made it easy work! I tried to pound the needle bearings out but failed. Also I'm still failing at getting the gears out of the main shaft.

So this is what I still have left to disassemble:

1. Needle Bearings need removed from the Lower housings

2. The seals that go around the hole where the motor goes through the upper housing still needs to be removed. I have tried beating it out, tried using the bolt with washer technique, can't get these guys out.

3. I need to still remove the shaft that is crimped on the ends out of the upper housing in order to remove the upper housing gears. I have tried pounding and tried spreading the crimps but no luck.

I think my best option is to probably take these pieces to a machine shop and see if their big toys can remove these pieces for me. Once these 3 things are done, I'm planning on cleaning them real well and taking them to the blaster for further clean up and then onto be powdercoated.

Anyways heres some pics, since I love pictures!

By the way the puller is a cheap one from O Reilly's, it was $14.00 and all they had at my local store

Thanks for the bumper,,,

I might be acquiring a winch on Sunday,,,, so, you'll need to sharpen your skills before mine gets in your garage.

Oh and Abel said two more weeks before paint.... Right.

....

Your welcome! I hope it serves you well. If you acquire a winch sunday let me know. We could tear it apart real fast and add it to the stuff I need to take to stan and the powder coated. Now that I know what I need to do to tear them down this far, we could get that one tore down really fast. I could take it with me to the machine shops on Monday to get what I need done, done on yours. Same goes for you Joel. If you want to tear it down, lets do it. You don't need it mounted by round up hah. If we take 4 to stan and to the powder coater we might get a better deal.

Yea right, I'm doubtful it'll be painted in 2 weeks.

By the way, Grant the throttle linkage worked like a charm. Still wanting that part though Joel. Thanks gents!

So what became of the Kens 5 segment ? I watched for it but never saw anything.... Or did I look on the wrong channel...

Nothing came from it. Abel's lawyer is doing something though

My paint guy was "investigated" by Kens 5 because some black scum bag had his feelings hurt when Abel couldn't get to his car fast enough

What? You're doing business with a racist painter? I'm shocked. Shocked I tell ya.

Well one of my new cables came in today for my winch. It's purty... I know guys are wondering why I went with cable instead of synthetic but Tucked brought up a valid point. The heat and Sun down here in San Antonio would most likely degrade the synthetic line pretty fast leading to changing it out often which gets expensive. The cables I removed from both winches were more than likely as old as the winches themselves. I'm not a hardcore off roader but enjoy a nice back country trail to a favorite fishing hole or at least I do in Colorado so the winch will most likely be used maybe once a year.

Still waiting on the other cable to show up. Next is ordering the seals and etc

Alright I decided to start cleaning some of the parts I could clean.... Well when I took apart the clutch assembly the ball bearing that was inside the handle shot out. Anyone know where I can get this ball bearing?

LOL - I did that with one of the brake ball bearings :(. I called Warn and they sent me a few for free ;). Let me know if you can't get one, you're welcome to try to get my damaged clutch apart ... can bring to the Roundup.

I've got part of the inop winch cleaned up. I'm trying to keep all the pieces together as much as I can in some kind of organized manner. Here is where I'm at now.

Tucker thanks man, i honestly just need the plate that mounts to the assembly. Is that damaged? Thanks for the advice I guess I'll be putting a call into Warn on Monday. The russell guy there seems to be a dick. I spoke to him about a week and half ago and he said the serial numbers do not mean anything and he would send sticker kits but never arrived.

Couple questions:

Did you bead blast everything? If not what did you not bead blast?

If you did bead blast everything, what didn't you powdercoat and did you have any concerns about the external coating of pieces you blasted and did not powdercoat?

I had everything other than the solenoid cover, clutch and motor blasted (soda + glass media). They did not powdercoat the gears, shafts, bearing recesses, and brake surfaces. I wasn't worried about the gears since the case will be coated with gear oil, but I'm sure the exposed main shaft and brake parts will rust eventually. They were all soaked in kerosine and are hit with WD40 on a regular basis -

Thanks Tucker I really appreciate the advice mate. What did you have soda blasted? Did you soda everything first and then bed blast?

Good idea on keeping everything lubed up with gear oil. I'm gonna try to get everything done this week so I can assemble after ordering what parts I need.
